باب تَحْرِيمِ قَتْلِ الْهِرَّةِ:Chapter: The Prohibition Of Killing Cats
Hadith 2242
حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ الضُّبَعِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ بْنُ أَسْمَاءَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " عُذِّبَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فِي هِرَّةٍ ، سَجَنَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ فَدَخَلَتْ فِيهَا النَّارَ ، لَا هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَسَقَتْهَا إِذْ حَبَسَتْهَا ، وَلَا هِيَ تَرَكَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ " .
Nafi' reported from 'Abdullah that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: A woman was punished because she had kept a cat tied until it died, and (as a punishment of this offence) she was thrown into the Hell. She had not provided it with food, or drink, and had not freed her so that she could eat the insects of the earth.

وحدثني نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، وَعَنْ سَعِيدٍ الْمَقْبُرِيِّ ، عَنْ أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، عن النبي صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِمِثْلِ مَعْنَاهُ .
And Nadr ibn ‘Ali al-Jahdhamiyy narrated to me, he said: ‘Abd al-A‘la narrated to us, from ‘Ubaydullah ibn ‘Umar, from Nafi‘, from Ibn ‘Umar, and from Sa‘id al-Maqburi, from Abu Hurayrah, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, with similar meaning.

وحدثنا هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ عِيسَى ، عَنْ مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ بِذَلِكَ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) through another chain of transmitters.

حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَسْمَاءَ بْنِ عُبَيْدٍ الضُّبَعِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا جُوَيْرِيَةُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ أَسْمَاءَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " عُذِّبَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فِي هِرَّةٍ سَجَنَتْهَا حَتَّى مَاتَتْ ، فَدَخَلَتْ فِيهَا النَّارَ لَا هِيَ أَطْعَمَتْهَا وَسَقَتْهَا إِذْ هِيَ حَبَسَتْهَا وَلَا هِيَ تَرَكَتْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ " .
'Abdullah reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: A woman was tormented because of a cat which she had confined until it died and she had to get into Hell. She did not allow it either to eat or drink as it was confined, nor did she free it so that it might eat the insects of the earth.

حَدَّثَنِي هَارُونُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، وَعَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ جَعْفَرِ بْنِ يَحْيَي بْنِ خَالِدٍ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ مَعْنِ بْنِ عِيسَى ، عَنْ مَالِكِ بْنِ أَنَسٍ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَن النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، بِمَعْنَى حَدِيثِ جُوَيْرِيَةَ .

وحَدَّثَنِيهِ نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْأَعْلَى ، عَنْ عُبَيْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عُمَرَ ، عَنْ نَافِعٍ ، عَنْ ابْنِ عُمَرَ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " عُذِّبَتِ امْرَأَةٌ فِي هِرَّةٍ أَوْثَقَتْهَا ، فَلَمْ تُطْعِمْهَا وَلَمْ تَسْقِهَا وَلَمْ تَدَعْهَا تَأْكُلُ مِنْ خَشَاشِ الْأَرْضِ " .
Ibn 'Umar reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: A woman was tormented because of a cat which she had tied and thus allowed it neither to eat or drink nor set it free so that it might eat the insects of the earth.

In a narration from Asma bint Abi Bakr radi Allahu anha, it is mentioned that when the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam performed the prayer during a solar eclipse, the Hellfire was shown to him during it.
In it, he saw a woman whom a cat was scratching.
Upon his inquiry, the angels informed him that she had imprisoned a cat without any reason until it died of hunger.
(Sahih al-Bukhari, al-Musāqāh, Hadith: 2364)

From this hadith, it is understood that causing harm to a cat is a major sin.

Imam al-Bukhari rahimahullah has narrated this hadith in the context of animals because it mentions a cat.
