Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
وَلَوْ كَانَ شَيْءٌ سَابَقَ الْقَدَرَ سَبَقَتْهُ الْعَيْنُ:
If anything could outstrip destiny and prevail over it, then the evil eye would have outstripped it.
The evil eye is, among apparent causes, a strong cause
that can cause harm,
but like other apparent causes, it cannot prevail over destiny.
For the one for whom Allah, the Exalted, has decreed health and safety,
the evil eye can in no way harm him,
just as for the one for whom Allah has decreed life,
even deadly poison cannot extinguish the lamp of his life.
In summary,
no matter how strong and firm an apparent cause may be,
it cannot prevail over destiny.
Destiny is an unalterable matter.
وَإِذَا اسْتُغْسِلْتُمْ فَاغْسِلُوا:
When you are asked to perform ritual washing (ghusl), then perform it.
If a person gives the evil eye to another, then the one who has cast the evil eye should wash his face,
both hands up to and including the elbows, both feet up to and including the knees, and the area below the navel or the inner part of the lower garment, in a vessel,
and this water should be given to the one affected by the evil eye, and he should pour the water from behind over his head and back,
so that, by Allah’s command, the effect of the evil eye may be removed.
When Sahl ibn Hunayf radi Allahu anhu was afflicted by the evil eye and became unconscious, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered this to be done,
(Sunan Ibn Majah: 3554).
