Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
The meaning of "waliyy":
Companion,
Friend,
Ally,
Supporter, and
Helper and Protector.
From this hadith, it is understood that the beloved, companion, helper, supporter, and relative of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam is only the one who, along with having faith, follows your religion and is righteous, even if he does not have a blood relationship with you. And the one who is not a believer and not righteous is not your beloved, companion, or relative, even if he is closely related to you by lineage.
Regarding the son of Prophet Nuh (alayhis salam) who was a disbeliever, Allah the Exalted said:
﴿إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ مِنْ أَهْلِكَ ۖ إِنَّهُ عَمَلٌ غَيْرُ صَالِحٍ﴾ (Hud: 46)
“He is not of your family; his conduct is not righteous.”
And regarding such a person, you (the Prophet) openly expressed disavowal, and this is also the appropriate attitude for a Muslim: that he should not maintain bonds of love and affection with disbelievers and sinners, even if they are his close relatives.
In view of this general principle, the narrator did not mention the name of that person, so that his Muslim and righteous descendants would not be hurt, or so that a wrong meaning would not be derived from it. Therefore, it should not be specified unnecessarily.
However, to use this hadith as a pretext for forbidding attendance at Muslim gatherings and assemblies under the guise of protecting one’s own sect or misguided group, in order to keep their followers under control, may be a trick, but it is not the demand or meaning of the hadith.
