Hadith 213

Nu'man bin Bashir was delivering an address and saying: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: the least suffering for the inhabitants of Hell on the Day of Resurrection would be for the man under whose soles would be placed two embers and his brain would boil on account of them.

Explanation & Benefits
Hafiz Imran Ayyub Lahori
Hadith Authentication (Takhrij al-Hadith):
[127۔ البخاري فى : 81 كتاب الرقاق : 51 باب صفة الجنة والنار 6561، مسلم 213، ابوعوانة 98/1]

Linguistic Explanation:
«أحْمَصِ قَدَمَیْه»: The lower part of the feet which does not touch the ground while walking.
«جَمْرَۃُ»: Ember.
«یَغْلِی»: Will boil.

Understanding the Hadith:
In one narration, it is stated that the lightest punishment in Hell will be that sandals of fire will be put on the feet, and because of this, the brain will boil just as a pot boils on the stove. [مسلم : كتاب الايمان 213]

In another narration, it is mentioned that this punishment will be for the uncle of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Abu Talib. [مسلم : كتاب الايمان 212]

Hadith Footnote:
In Sahih Muslim, there is mention of being made to wear two sandals of fire.
By this, Abu Talib is meant.

Explanation:
Abu Talib was the highly respected uncle of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
His name was Abd Manaf bin Abdul Muttalib bin Hashim.
Ali al-Murtada radi Allahu anhu was his son.
He always supported the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, but due to the prejudice of his people, he did not accept Islam.
Five days after his death, Khadijah al-Kubra radi Allahu anha also passed away.
The separation from both of them caused the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam immense grief, but he did not let go of patience and steadfastness, until Allah the Exalted granted him victory.

Hadith Footnote:
By "kettle" is meant a vessel similar to a teapot in which water is boiled.
In some manuscripts, instead of "wal-qamqam" it is written as "bil-qamqam."
Qadi Iyad said that the correct word is "wal-qamqam."
This "waaw" is conjunctive, but in the narration of Isma'ili rahimahullah, it is "aw al-qamqam."

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
In a hadith narrated from Ibn Abbas radi Allahu anhu, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said:
“The lightest and least punishment among the people of Hell will be for Abu Talib.
He will be made to wear two sandals of fire, due to which his brain will be boiling.”
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Hadith: 515 (212))
In another narration, it is mentioned that he will think he is receiving the most severe punishment, while in reality, he will be given the lightest punishment.
(Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Iman, Hadith: 517 (213))

(2)
Just as fire causes a pot to boil, similarly, the fire of Hell will intensely heat the human body to the extent that, due to its effect, the brain will be boiling.
May Allah protect us from it.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith, it is understood that the person entering Hell will think that the most severe punishment is being inflicted upon him alone. Therefore, the intercession of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), by which the punishment of Abu Talib was lessened, did not become beneficial for him in this regard. Thus, this alleviation is not contrary to the statement: ﴿فَمَا تَنفَعُهُمْ شَفَاعَةُ الشَّافِعِينَ﴾ (), nor is it contrary to the meaning of benefit here; rather, by benefit is meant: being taken out of Hell, and they will not be able to come out of Hell.

Explanation:
1:
It is most likely that Abu Talib is meant by this, because in the narrations of Muslim and other scholars, this is explicitly stated.
