باب تَحْرِيمِ تَصْوِيرِ صُورَةِ الْحَيَوَانِ وَتَحْرِيمِ اتِّخَاذِ مَا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ غَيْرُ مُمْتَهَنَةٍ بِالْفَرْشِ وَنَحْوِهِ وَأَنَّ الْمَلَائِكَةَ عَلَيْهِمْ السَّلَام لَا يَدْخُلُونَ بَيْتًا فِيهِ صُورَةٌ وَلَا كَلْبٌChapter: The Prohibition Of Making Images Of Living Beings, And The Prohibition Of Using Images That Are Not Subjected To Disrespect In Furnishings And The Like; The Angels (Peace Be Upon Them) Do Not Enter A House In Which There Is An Image Or A Dog
Hadith 2109
حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ . ح وحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو سَعِيدٍ الْأَشَجُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا وَكِيعٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْأَعْمَشُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الضُّحَى ، عَنْ مَسْرُوقٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ ، قال : قال رسول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنَّ أَشَدَّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الْمُصَوِّرُونَ " ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ الْأَشَجُّ إِنَّ .
'Abdullah reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Verity the most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of pictures. Ashajj (one of the narrators) in the hadith narrated by him did not make mention of the word" verity".

وحدثنا يَحْيَي بْنُ يَحْيَي ، وَأَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَأَبُو كُرَيْبٍ كُلُّهُمْ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ . ح وحدثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ وَفِي رِوَايَةِ يَحْيَي ، وَأَبِي كُرَيْبٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، إِنَّ مِنْ أَشَدِّ أَهْلِ النَّارِ يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ عَذَابًا الْمُصَوِّرُونَ ، وَحَدِيثُ سُفْيَانَ كَحَدِيثِ وَكِيعٍ .
This hadith has been reported on the authority of Abu Mu'awiyahh (RA) through another chain of tranmitters (and the words are):" Verity, the most grievously tormented people amongst the denizens of Hell on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of pictures. The rest of the hadith is the same.

وحَدَّثَنَا نَصْرُ بْنُ عَلِيٍّ الْجَهْضَمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الْعَزِيزِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الصَّمَدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا مَنْصُورٌ ، عَنْ مُسْلِمِ بْنِ صُبَيْحٍ ، قال : كُنْتُ مَعَ مَسْرُوقٍ فِي بَيْتٍ فِيهِ تَمَاثِيلُ مَرْيَمَ ، فَقَالَ مَسْرُوقٌ : هَذَا تَمَاثِيلُ كِسْرَى ، فَقُلْتُ : لَا هَذَا تَمَاثِيلُ مَرْيَمَ ، فَقَالَ مَسْرُوقٌ : أَمَا إِنِّي سَمِعْتُ عَبْدَ اللَّهِ بْنَ مَسْعُودٍ ، يقول : قال رسول اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " أَشَدُّ النَّاسِ عَذَابًا يَوْمَ الْقِيَامَةِ الْمُصَوِّرُونَ " .
Muslim bin Subaih reported: I was with Masruq in the house which had the portrayals of Mary (hadrat Maryam). Thereupon Masruq said: These are portraits of Kisra. I said: No, these are of Mary. Masruq said: I heard'Abdullah b, Mas'ud as saying Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had said: The most grievously tormented people on the Day of Resurrection would be the painters of pictures.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: Muslim bin Subaih is the name of Abu ad-Duha, who was a student of Masruq rahimahullah. This house also belonged to Yasar, the freed slave of Umar radi Allahu anhu, who was from the tribe of Nimir. He must have bought it from a Christian, and these were likely in the form of engravings or designs on some bedding, which was lying in the hut or on the platform, just as nowadays a person's portrait is drawn on cloth or paper, and they would have considered that portrait to be proper.
