Jabir bin'Abdullah (RA) reported that one day Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) put on a cloak made of brocade, which had been presented to him. He then quickly put it off and sent it to 'Umar bin Khattab, and it was said to him: Messenger of Allah. why is it that you put it of immediately. whereupon he said: Gabriel (ؑ) forbade me from it (i. e. wearing of Ods garment), and 'Umar came to him weeping and said: Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) you disapproved a thing but you gave it to me. What about me, then? Thereupon be (the Holy Prophet) Wd: I did not give it to you to wear it, but I gave you that you might sell it; and so he (Hadrat Umar) sold it for two thousand dirhams.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: From this hadith, it is understood that this incident took place at a time when you had not yet been prohibited from wearing silk. When you wore the silk robe, immediately Jibril (Gabriel) came and forbade it, and you, in compliance with the command, removed it at that very moment. From this, it is evident that Jibril used to bring commands and guidance to you besides the Qur’an as well. Since the use of silk is prohibited only for men, you instructed Umar radi Allahu anhu to sell it, and from this it is also understood that if there is any doubt regarding someone’s action, it should be presented before the concerned person and resolved, and one should not unnecessarily harbor ill thoughts about them in the heart. And this is a different incident; the incident of giving it to a “mushrik” (polytheist) is separate from this.
