Chapter: The virtue of vinegar and using it as a condiment

Hadith 2051

حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الدَّارِمِيُّ ، أَخْبَرَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ حَسَّانَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ ، عَنْ هِشَامِ بْنِ عُرْوَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ عَائِشَةَ ، أَنّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " نِعْمَ الْأُدُمُ أَوِ الْإِدَامُ الْخَلُّ " .
'A'isha reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: The best of condiments or condiment is vinegar.

وحَدَّثَنَاه مُوسَى بْنُ قُرَيْشِ بْنِ نَافِعٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا يَحْيَي بْنُ صَالِحٍ الْوُحَاظِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُلَيْمَانُ بْنُ بِلَالٍ بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وَقَالَ نِعْمَ الْأُدُمُ وَلَمْ يَشُكَّ .
This hadith has been reported on the authority of Sulaiman bin Bilal (RA) with the same chain of transmitters and he is reported to have said: "The best condiment." And he did not doubt (about this word).

Tirmidhi — Hadith 1841
Umm Hani bint Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with her) says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to my house and said: "Do you have anything (to eat)?" I replied: "No, only a few dry pieces of bread and some vinegar." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Bring it, a house in which there is vinegar is not in need of curry (gravy)." © Imam Tirmidhi says:
1- This hadith is Hasan Gharib through this chain; we know it only from the narration of Umm Hani through this chain,
2- Umm Hani passed away a few days after Ali bin Abi Talib,
3- I asked Muhammad bin Ismail Bukhari about this hadith, and he said: I do not know of Shu’bi hearing from Umm Hani,
4- I asked again: In your view, how is Abu Hamzah Thabit bin Abi Safiyyah? He said: Ahmad bin Hanbal has spoken about him, and in my view, he is maqaarib al-hadith (acceptable in hadith).

Commentary:
(In the chain of narration, Abu Hamzah, Thabit bin Abi Safiyyah, is a weak narrator. However, by being strengthened through the hadith of Jabir radi Allahu anhu in Musnad Ahmad (3/353), this hadith is hasan li-ghayrihi (good due to corroborating evidence). Al-Silsilah al-Sahihah: 2220)
