باب اسْتِحُبَابِ لَعْقِ الْأَصَابِعِ وَالْقَصْعَةِ ، وَأَكُلِ اللُّقْمَةِ السَّاقِطَةِ بَعْدَ مَسْحِ مَا يُصِيبُهَا مِنّ أَذًي ، وَّكَراهَةِ مَسْح الْيَدِ قَبْلَ لَعْقِهَا لِاحْتِمَالِ كَوْنِ بَرَكَةِ الطَّعَامِ فَي ذٰلِكَ الْبَاقِي وَ أَنَّ السُّنَّةُ الْأَكْلُ بِثَلَاثِ أَصَابِعَChapter: It is recommended to lick one's fingers and wipe the bowl, and to eat a piece of food that is dropped after removing any dirt on it. It is disliked to wipe one's hand before licking it, because of the possibility that the blessing of the food may be in that remaining part. The Sunnah is to eat with three fingers
Hadith 2033
وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ بْنُ عُيَيْنَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، أَنَّ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، أَمَرَ بِلَعْقِ الْأَصَابِعِ وَالصَّحْفَةِ ، وَقَالَ : " إِنَّكُمْ لَا تَدْرُونَ فِي أَيِّهِ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Jabir reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) commanded the licking of fingers and the dish, saying: "You do not know in what portion the blessing lies."

حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ نُمَيْرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الزُّبَيْرِ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِذَا وَقَعَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ ، فَلْيَأْخُذْهَا فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى وَلْيَأْكُلْهَا ، وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ ، وَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَ أَصَابِعَهُ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Jabir reported Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: When any one of you drops a mouthful he should pick it up and remove any of the filth on it, and then eat it, and should not leave it for the Satan, and should not wipe his hand with towel until he has licked his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of the food the blessing lies.

وحَدَّثَنَاه إِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا أَبُو دَاوُدَ الْحَفَرِيُّ . ح وحَدَّثَنِيهِ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ رَافِعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ الرَّزَّاقِ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ ، وَفِي حَدِيثِهِمَا وَلَا يَمْسَحْ يَدَهُ بِالْمِنْدِيلِ حَتَّى يَلْعَقَهَا أَوْ يُلْعِقَهَا وَمَا بَعْدَهُ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Sufyan with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of wording.

حَدَّثَنَا عُثْمَانُ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا جَرِيرٌ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، يَقُولُ : " إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ عِنْدَ كُلِّ شَيْءٍ مِنْ شَأْنِهِ حَتَّى يَحْضُرَهُ عِنْدَ طَعَامِهِ ، فَإِذَا سَقَطَتْ مِنْ أَحَدِكُمُ اللُّقْمَةُ ، فَلْيُمِطْ مَا كَانَ بِهَا مِنْ أَذًى ثُمَّ لِيَأْكُلْهَا ، وَلَا يَدَعْهَا لِلشَّيْطَانِ ، فَإِذَا فَرَغَ فَلْيَلْعَقْ أَصَابِعَهُ ، فَإِنَّهُ لَا يَدْرِي فِي أَيِّ طَعَامِهِ تَكُونُ الْبَرَكَةُ " .
Jabir reported: I heard Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) as saying: The Satan is present with any one of you in everything he does; he is present even when he eats food; so if any one of you drops a mouthful he should remove away anything filthy on it and eat it and not leave for the devil; and when he finishes (food) he should lick his fingers, for he does not know in what portion of his food the blessing lies.

وحَدَّثَنَاه أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ ، وَإِسْحَاقُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ جَمِيعًا ، عَنْ أَبِي مُعَاوِيَةَ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ إِذَا سَقَطَتْ لُقْمَةُ أَحَدِكُمْ إِلَى آخِرِ الْحَدِيثِ ، وَلَمْ يَذْكُرْ أَوَّلَ الْحَدِيثِ إِنَّ الشَّيْطَانَ يَحْضُرُ أَحَدَكُمْ .
This hadith is reported on the authority of A'mash with the same chain of transmitters but with a slight variation of words but no mention is made of the first part of the hadith, i. e. the Satan is present with any one of you.

وحَدَّثَنَا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ فُضَيْلٍ ، عَنْ الْأَعْمَشِ ، عَنْ أَبِي صَالِحٍ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ فِي ذِكْرِ اللَّعْقِ ، وَعَنْ أَبِي سُفْيَان َ ، عَنْ جَابِرٍ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، وَذَكَرَ اللُّقْمَةَ نَحْوَ حَدِيثِهِمَا .
Jabir reported from Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) about mentioning the licking (of fingers) and the (falling of) the mouthful.

Explanation:
1:
That is, the dust or dirt that has settled on the fallen morsel should be removed,
so that one appreciates this blessing of Allah,
and eats it,
not leaving it for Shaytan, because leaving it would be showing ingratitude for this blessing.
However, it should also be considered that the morsel has not fallen in a place that is impure or filthy;
if that is the case, then it is better to clean it and feed it to an animal.

It is not appropriate to wipe the hand with a cloth or wash it with water without first cleaning it, because in this way the cloth will be soiled or water will be used more than necessary, and the food particles stuck to the hand will go into the bread, which is a form of disrespect for the blessing of sustenance.

Blessing (barakah) is an intangible and imperceptible thing. For its attainment, one should act upon the teachings of the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) and avoid wasting sustenance.

Letting someone else lick (the fingers) is permissible when the other person does not feel any aversion to it, for example: a wife or children, etc.
