Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) forbade keeping meat for more than three days, considering the needs of the poor and needy, so that it could be distributed among those in need. During the days of the siege of Uthman (radi Allahu anhu), when the Bedouins (ahl al-bawadi) again came to Madinah and there was a need to distribute meat to fulfill their needs and necessities, Ali (radi Allahu anhu) narrated this hadith. However, since the underlying reason (illah) for this ruling ceased to exist, this hadith is abrogated, as will be explicitly mentioned ahead. This is the view of most scholars. It is better that the meat be divided into three portions: one portion for the household, one portion for friends and neighbors, and one portion for the poor and needy. This is transmitted from Abdullah ibn Mas'ud (radi Allahu anhu) and Abdullah ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma). This is also the view of Imam Ahmad, and another opinion is that half should be kept for the household and half distributed. According to the Hanafis, the more one gives in charity, the better it is. The correct view is that there is no restriction in this matter; the more one gives in charity, the greater the reward and recompense. For details, see (al-Mughni, vol. 13, pp. 379–380).
According to Imam Ahmad, the concession of keeping meat for more than three days did not reach Ali (radi Allahu anhu) and Ibn Umar (radi Allahu anhuma), so they remained upon the original text (nass).
