Jabir bin 'Abdullah reported: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) led us in the 'Id prayer in Madinah on the Day of Sacrifice. Some persons slaughtered their animals ahead of him under the impression that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) had-already offered sacrifice. Thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Those who had slaughtered their animals ahead of him should slaughter the other ones in their stead. And they should not sacrifice the animal before Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) had sacrificed (his animal)

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: According to most of the Imams, the purpose of this hadith is that the Prophet Muhammad (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) used to perform the sacrifice (qurbani) after the Eid sermon, therefore, the sacrifice should be performed after the Eid prayer. If someone performs the sacrifice before Eid, then that will not be considered a valid sacrifice. According to the Malikis, its meaning is that the sacrifice should be performed after the Imam's sacrifice; whoever performs the sacrifice before the Imam, his sacrifice will not be valid.
