باب بَيَانِ قَدْرِ ثَوَابِ مَنْ غَزَا فَغَنِمَ وَمَنْ لَمْ يَغْنَمْ:Chapter: The reward of those who fought and acquired spoils of war and those who did not acquire spoils of war
Hadith 1906
حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ بْنُ حُمَيْد ، حَدَّثَنَا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ يَزِيدَ أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، حَدَّثَنَا حَيْوَةُ بْنُ شُرَيْحٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي هَانِئٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحُبُلِيِّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ : " مَا مِنْ غَازِيَةٍ تَغْزُو فِي سَبِيلِ اللَّهِ ، فَيُصِيبُونَ الْغَنِيمَةَ إِلَّا تَعَجَّلُوا ثُلُثَيْ أَجْرِهِمْ مِنَ الْآخِرَةِ وَيَبْقَى لَهُمُ الثُّلُثُ ، وَإِنْ لَمْ يُصِيبُوا غَنِيمَةً تَمَّ لَهُمْ أَجْرُهُمْ " .
It has been narrated on the authority of 'Abdullah bin 'Amr that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A troop of soldiers who fight in tile way of Allah and get their share of the booty receive in advance two-thirds of their reward in the Hereafter and only one-third will remain (to their credit). If they do not receive any booty, they will get their full reward.

حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ سَهْلٍ التَّمِيمِيُّ ، حَدَّثَنَا ابْنُ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا نَافِعُ بْنُ يَزِيدَ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو هَانِئٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ الْحُبُلِيُّ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ عَمْرٍو ، قَالَ : قَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " مَا مِنْ غَازِيَةٍ أَوْ سَرِيَّةٍ تَغْزُو ، فَتَغْنَمُ وَتَسْلَمُ إِلَّا كَانُوا قَدْ تَعَجَّلُوا ثُلُثَيْ أُجُورِهِمْ ، وَمَا مِنْ غَازِيَةٍ أَوْ سَرِيَّةٍ تُخْفِقُ وَتُصَابُ إِلَّا تَمَّ أُجُورُهُمْ " .
It has been narrated on the authority of'Abdullah bin 'Amr (RA) (through a different chain of transmitters) that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: A troop of soldiers, large or small, who fight (in the way of Allah), get their share of the booty and return safe and sound, receive in advance two-thirds of their reward (only one-third remaining to their credit to be received in the Hereafter) ; and a troop of soldiers, large or small, who return empty-handed and are afflicted or wounded, will receive their full reward (in the Hereafter).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: This hadith shows that if a mujahid participates in jihad with sincerity of intention, and war booty (ghanimah) is not his aim or objective, but he returns safely and also receives ghanimah, then out of the three rewards for the mujahid—safety, ghanimah, and reward in the Hereafter—he attains two rewards, and only the third remains. However, if he attains the rank of martyrdom (shahadah), or is deprived of ghanimah, then according to the principle that reward is in proportion to hardship and difficulty, his reward increases. And this is an evident reality: the one who did not survive, or did not receive ghanimah, his hardship and difficulty is greater than the one who survived and also obtained ghanimah. For example, if the people of Badr had not received ghanimah, their reward would have been even greater than what they now receive. Therefore, from this hadith it cannot be established that the rank of the people of Uhud should be higher than that of the people of Badr, because many among them were martyred and those who remained did not receive ghanimah.
