Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
The number of participants in the Pledge of Ridwan (Bay‘at al-Ridwan) or the Companions of the Tree (Ashab al-Shajarah) was fourteen hundred (1400), as is evident from the distribution of the shares at Khaybar. However, since they were not counted, this number is based on estimation. Generally, Jabir radi Allahu anhu mentioned fourteen hundred, and at times he said fifteen hundred, while Abdullah ibn [another Companion] according to his estimation said thirteen hundred. This is a difference based on their respective estimations, because in estimation there can be increase or decrease.
