It has been narrated on the authority of Usaid bin Hudair that a man from the Ansar took the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) aside and said to him: Will you not appoint me governor as you have appointed so and so? He (the Messenger of Allah) (ﷺ) said: You will surely come across preferential treatment after me, so you should be patient until you meet me at the Cistern (Haud-i-Kauthar).
This tradition has been narrated on the same authority through a different chain of transmitters.
Another version of the tradition narrated on the authority of Shu'bah does not include the words:" He took the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) aside."

Hadith Footnote: Hafiz said that the one who made this request was Usayd bin Hudayr himself, and the one who was given authority was Amr bin al-As.
Explanation:
Hafiz Sahib states:
(Fath al-Bari)
That is, this narration is from a Companion (Anas radi Allahu anhu) from a Companion (Usayd radi Allahu anhu), and Muslim has added that this narration was transmitted by Yahya bin Sa'id and Hisham bin Zayd from Anas, without mentioning Usayd, but the story is mentioned in brief, and both of them have mentioned another story besides this one. The hadith of Yahya bin Sa'id has already been mentioned in the chapter on Jizyah, and the hadith of Hisham will come in the chapter on Maghazi (Expeditions), and regarding this hadith, another incident has been mentioned from another route, which Imam al-Shafi'i has narrated from Muhammad bin Ibrahim al-Taymi from Usayd bin Hudayr, that Abu Usayd requested help from the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam for two households from among the Ansar. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that each household be given a wasq (a measure) of dates and a portion of barley as aid. Upon this, Usayd thanked the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam by saying, "Jazak Allahu khayran," and the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam replied, "And may Allah reward you with goodness, O group of Ansar! Indeed, you are chaste and patient, and after me you will face favoritism (others being preferred over you), so at that time, be patient until you meet me at the Hawd (Pond) of Kawthar."

Shaykh Abdul Sattar al-Hammad
Hadith Commentary:
The meaning of the statement of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) is that the position I have given to another person is based on the fact that the general welfare of the Muslims required it.
There is no personal status of that individual in this matter.
In my era, there will be no personal preferences.
After me, you will witness such deprivation of rights and favoritism.
But in such circumstances, you must not create any discord; rather, you should demonstrate patience and steadfastness, because taking the wrong path to obtain your rights results in harm to the country and the community.
It is possible that the one demanding his rights may also suffer irreparable loss; therefore, safety lies in neither taking any action oneself nor becoming an instrument for wrongdoers.
And Allah knows best.

Hafiz Muhammad Ameen
(1) This blessed hadith indicates the virtues and greatness of the Ansar, as the Noble Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) praised them, and he also instructed them to be patient.
(2) This blessed hadith is also a great sign among the signs of Prophethood, in that just as he (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) foretold, events unfolded exactly in that manner afterwards.
(3) Not every person can be appointed to a position, because there are not enough posts available; therefore, other people should not express envy or rebellion, but rather should exercise patience, otherwise chaos may spread.
(4) “You will perceive”—the addressees here can be the general people, and specifically the Ansar as well, because later on, governance remained with the Quraysh, and generally, Qurayshi individuals held official positions.
(5) “Until you meet me at the Pond”—that is, as a result of patience, you will be granted the Pond of Kawthar. It can also mean: “Be patient so that you may be granted the Pond of Kawthar and attain my meeting,” whereas in the case of conflict and discord, both of these blessings may be lost.
