This hadith is listed as number 4772 in Maktaba Shamila

It has been narrated on the authority of Abu Hurairah (RA) that the Prophet (ﷺ) of Allah (ﷺ) said: A commander (of the Muslims) is a shield for them. They fight behind him and they are protected by (him from tyrants and aggressors). If he enjoins fear of God, the Exalted and Glorious, and dispenses justice, there will be a (great) reward for him; and if he enjoins otherwise, it redounds on him.

(2)
yuqatilu man wara’ihi:
Battle is fought under his protection and leadership.
(3)
yuttaqa bihi:

Benefits and Issues:
From this hadith, it is understood that the supreme ruler and Imam is the protector and guardian of the interests of his subjects. He protects them from all kinds of external and internal dangers and harms, arranges and manages defense against enemy attacks, protects the borders, and saves people from internal strife, disorder, and from oppressing one another. Due to his awe and authority, people do not oppress each other, and his duty is to command the people to adhere to the limits set by Allah and to act with justice and fairness so that he may be successful before Allah and attain reward. If he acts contrary to this, breaks the Islamic limits himself, and acts with oppression and injustice, then he will be held accountable for it, but rebellion against him will not be permitted.

(1) After the determination and clarification of the rights and duties of the leader and imam, whoever deviates from or transgresses them will be sinful. If the imam fulfills his duties with justice and fairness, he will be deserving of great reward, and if he acts with oppression and injustice, he will be deemed sinful in the sight of Allah.

(2) It is clear from the blessed hadith that the imam should be made a shield, and that evil, discord, and corruption should be avoided through the imam. His just decisions in all matters should be accepted, and he should be obeyed; under no circumstances should he be deprived of cooperation, nor should he be left helpless in any situation. He should not be abandoned out of fear for one's own destruction, and so on. Some scholars have said that the legitimate leader and ruler is a shield for the people in such a way that, as long as he is present, no one oppresses another, and the enemy also remains fearful of him; therefore, it is the duty of all Muslims to protect this shield. Some have said that the meaning of "fighting behind him" is that the imam should be kept in a secure place; another meaning is that the imam himself should be in the front ranks of the fighters and bravely fight the enemy. Both meanings are correct, because in some instances a secure place was made for the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), from where he would observe the battlefield and issue commands accordingly, and in some instances it is established that the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) fought in the front ranks; when the battle would intensify, the Companions would make him a shield for themselves.

Benefits and Issues:
Imam means leader.
And the leader is a symbol of the dignity and grandeur of Islam and the Muslims.
He arranges measures to protect them from enemies.
And he also maintains peace and security among them.
Therefore, it is necessary that all people honor the covenants and agreements made with the disbelievers.
