Hadith 184

Abu Sa'id al-Khudri reported: Verily the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: Allah will admit into Paradise those deserving of Paradise, and He will admit whom He wishes out of His Mercy, and admit those condemned to Hell into the Fire (of Hell). He would then say: See, he whom you find having as much faith in his heart as a grain of mustard, bring him out. They will then be brought out burned and turned to charcoal, and would be cast into the river of life, and they would sprout aj does a seed in the silt carried away by flood. Have you not seen that it comes out yellow (fresh) and intertwined?

This hadith is transmitted by 'Amr bin Yahya with the same chain of transmitters who narrated: They would be cast into the river which is called (the river of) life, and (both the narrators) did not doubt the hadith. The text transmitted by Khalid is: just as seeds sprout beside the flood water; and in the hadith of Wuhaib it is: Just as the seed sprouts in the silt or deposit left by flood.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Nahr al-Hayat,
or al-Haya:
The river of life,
or the river of rain,
Rain is called "haya"
because it becomes the cause of the life and fertility of the earth,
In the same way, those who are washed with this water
will emerge fresh and lively, just as greenery emerges fresh and lively after rain.
(2)
Multawiyah:
From "iltawa",
meaning twisted or coiled.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
Entry into Paradise
depends on the mercy of Allah, the Exalted.
It is as a result of His mercy that one is granted the ability to perform righteous deeds,
and if His mercy is present, then deeds will be accepted,
and as a result of His mercy, entry into Paradise will occur.
(2)
The people of faith,
who are evil-doers and undergo punishment for their sins, will enter Hell,
When the fire of Hell consumes their sins and they are burnt and turned to coal,
the effect of faith will remain in their hearts and they will even be able to see Paradise,
then, as a result of intercession, they will be taken out of Hell.
(3)
There is increase and decrease in faith; not everyone's faith is equal and identical.

Hadith Commentary:
(1)
Those people who will be taken out of Hell, the inhabitants of Paradise will refer to them with the title "Jahannami" (people of Hell), whereas with Allah, their name will be "those freed by Allah," as is mentioned in a hadith.
(Sahih Muslim, Al-Iman, Hadith: 454 (183)) (2)
The return of people to their original state has been likened to that seed which quickly sprouts in the debris and refuse of a flood.
When the inhabitants of Hell are placed in the Water of Life (Aab-e-Hayat), they will very quickly return to their original bodies.
Some scholars are of the opinion that the title "Jahannami" is not for their disgrace, but rather so that they may remember Allah's blessing and continue to express gratitude for it. However, Hafiz Ibn Hajar rahimahullah did not agree with this view; rather, he wrote that if this were the case, there would be no reason to remove this title.

Hadith Glossary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
Dhunoob:
Plural of dhanb,
sins,
crime.
(2)
Khataya:
Plural of khati’ah,
slip,
mistake.
(3)
Dhabā’ir:
Plural of dhibārah,
group,
party.
(4)
Buththu:
From bathth,
to be scattered,
to be spread out.

Benefits and Issues:
Those people who are eternally destined for Hell due to disbelief and polytheism,
they will not die,
meaning:
in no way will they attain deliverance from the punishment,
nor will they live,
meaning:
they will never attain the comfort and ease of life.

But those who are believers,
and are cast into Hell as a consequence of their sins and mistakes,
they will be subjected to punishment in proportion to their sins, burning and becoming like charcoal,
then they will be taken out of Hell and placed in the Water of Life, and life will be granted to them,
and they will immediately grow and flourish and be admitted into Paradise.

Benefits and Issues:
(1)
Passing safely and swiftly over the Bridge of Sirat will depend on faith (iman) and righteous deeds (amal salih). The stronger the faith, the faster one will cross; and the greater the sins, the more the hooks and thorns on the Bridge of Sirat will wound the person. And for those concerning whom it is decreed, those hooks will drag them into Hell (Jahannam).

Benefits and Issues:

Sinful believers will be taken out of Hell after spending some time receiving punishment.

The believers mentioned in this hadith are those who will be the last to be taken out of Hell.
Whether they are taken out due to the intercession of the believers or by Allah’s special grace without anyone’s intercession.

The water of Paradise will remove the effects of Hell.
And those who are saved from Hell will become happy and healthy just like the other inhabitants of Paradise.

When floodwater is strong, grains of crops or seeds of wild plants also come along with it.
And when the floodwater recedes, the soil that came with it remains behind.
And in it, those moist seeds sprout.

When a seed sprouts, the plant is weak, withered, and yellow.
Similarly, when those sinful people come out of Hell, they will be burnt and weak due to the fire.
Then, because of the water of Paradise, they will become healthy.

One should not despair of Allah’s mercy, but neither should one feel secure from Allah’s punishment.
