Hadith 1833

It has been reported on the authority of 'Adi bin 'Amira al-Kindi who said: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: Whoso from you is appointed by us to a position of authority and he conceals from us a needle or something smaller than that, it would be misappropriation (of public funds) and will (have to) produce it on the Day of Judgment. The narrator says: A dark-complexioned man from the Ansar stood up-I can visualise him still-and said: Messenger of Allah, take back from me your assignment. He said: What has happened to you? The man said: I have heard you say so and so. He said: I say that (even) now: Whoso from you is appointed by as to a position of authority, he should bring everything, big of small, and whatever he is given therefrom he should take, and he should restrain himself from taking that which is forbidden.

Explanation & Benefits
Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues: From this hadith, it is understood that a government employee or official may only take the salary or benefits that the government itself has granted. If he takes anything beyond that, he will be held accountable for it—even if it is a thread, a needle, or any benefit, whether less or more, taken unlawfully, it is considered a betrayal (khiyanah), for which he will have to answer on the Day of Resurrection. However, today Muslim rulers and their officials or employees do not care how many unlawful benefits they are deriving from their positions, nor do they consider that one day they will have to appear before the court of Allah and give account for this. The same is the case with those who, in the name of national or collective work, accumulate wealth and property, and then, considering it as mother’s milk, consume it without hesitation. May Allah Ta’ala grant all of us a sense of responsibility and bestow upon us the ability to avoid such actions.

Benefits and Issues:
Benefit: The responsibility of all national and collective affairs is extremely important.
This also includes the responsibility of revenues.
Even the slightest negligence or shortcoming in this regard becomes a cause of ruin for a person in the Hereafter.
If someone holding such responsibilities receives gifts, presents, or other benefits from anywhere,
then these are not lawful (halal) for him.
All such items must be deposited in the treasury.
Furthermore, it is also obligatory upon the supreme authority (ruler) to keep reminding his subjects of their responsibilities,
and to remind them of their accountability before Allah in the Hereafter,
and he himself should also remain alert and cautious.

Benefit:
From this hadith, it is understood that betrayal of trust (khiyanah) is a very grave crime, and whoever commits betrayal in trust in this world will bring that betrayal with him on the Day of Judgment. Furthermore, this hadith contains a great admonition for those emissaries who embezzle money, take something from people, and inform the administration of the madrasahs of something else. A person should always be concerned about the Hereafter and should not destroy his Hereafter for the sake of worldly objectives. Disgrace in the Hereafter is the greatest disgrace. May Allah protect us from disgrace in the Hereafter, ameen.

Regrettably, we are witnessing that in all governmental and non-governmental institutions, betrayal is being committed in financial matters. May Allah grant everyone His fear, and protect us from dishonesty in monetary dealings, ameen.
