Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
أَنْتَ كُنْتَ تَفْعَلُ ذَالِكَ:
This is an interrogative of denial, meaning: Do you think that if you had been with the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, you would have greatly assisted him and shown more valor than the Companions radi Allahu anhum ajma‘in? This is impossible.
(2)
قُرٌّ:
Intense cold.
(3)
فَلَم يُجِبْهُ أَحَدٌ:
That is, even the most devoted and self-sacrificing Companions, due to the exhaustion and fatigue from the circumstances of the Battle of the Trench (Khandaq), were so worn out that even after repeatedly hearing this great glad tiding, they were not ready to go. Although they were always prepared to plunge into every kind of danger and hardship in support and defense of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, so how could you have helped him?
(4)
لَاتَزْعَرْهُمْ عَلَيَّ:
Do not incite them against me, meaning: do not provoke them so that they start chasing after me because of something you do.
(5)
كَأَنَّمَا أَمْشِي فِي الْحَمَّام:
People were shivering from the cold, but I was walking in warmth, protected from the biting wind and chill. This was the result of obeying your command and the supplication of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: as long as I was engaged in your task, I did not feel the cold, but when I finished, I began to feel cold.
Noman:
A heavy sleeper, one who sleeps a lot. The Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said this jokingly.
Benefits and Issues:
Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu, in accordance with the command of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, infiltrated among the polytheists of Makkah, and the armies of Allah had already caused them great distress: their pots were overturned, tents uprooted, and the fire was in turmoil. Then Abu Sufyan stood up and said, "O assembly of Quraysh, let every man look around himself and recognize his companion (lest there be a spy from among the Muslims)." Hudhayfah radi Allahu anhu says, "I grabbed the hand of the one next to me and asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am so-and-so, son of so-and-so' (he told his name)."
Then Abu Sufyan said, "O people of Quraysh, by Allah, it is no longer possible for you to remain here. Horses and camels are perishing, Banu Qurayzah have broken their pact with us, and we are hearing unpleasant things from their side. The fierce wind has done to us what you see. Depart! I am leaving." Then he went to his camel, which was tied, mounted it, and spurred it so that it leapt up on three legs. By Allah, he untied the knee-cord of the standing camel, and if it were not for the instruction of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam that I should not make any move until I returned to him, I would have killed him. Then I returned to the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, who was standing in prayer, and he was covered with a cloak belonging to one of the Mothers of the Believers.
The Battle of the Trench (Khandaq) took place in Shawwal, 5 AH, and the polytheists maintained the siege of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam and the Muslims for about a month, which began in Shawwal and ended in Dhu al-Qa‘dah.
