It has been narrated on the authority of Ibn 'Amr who said: The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) besieged the people of Ta'if, but did get victory over them. He said: God willing, we shall return. His Companions said: Shall we depart without having conquered it? The Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: (All right) make a raid in the morning. They did so and were wounded (with the arrows showered upon them). So the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) said: We shall depart tomorrow. (The narrator says): (Now) this (announcement) pleased them, and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) laughed at (their waywardness).

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:

The people of Ta’if, after the Battle of Hunayn, fled and took refuge in their fortress. Therefore, after concluding the events at Hunayn and gathering the spoils of war at Ji‘ranah in the month of Shawwal, 8 AH, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) set out towards Ta’if and, upon arrival, laid siege to their fortress.

Those people had stockpiled provisions and food supplies sufficient for a whole year, and they shot arrows at the Muslims with such intensity that it seemed as if a swarm of locusts had descended.

For the first time, the Muslims used a mangonel (manjaniq) and a testudo (dabbabah) to conquer this fortress.

However, when it appeared that the fortress could not be subdued, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) announced the decision to return.

But this announcement was difficult for the noble Companions (radi Allahu anhum) to accept: why should they return without conquering Ta’if? So the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) said:

"Very well, then go out to fight tomorrow."

The next day, when they went out to fight, they gained nothing except wounds. After this, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) again said,

"We shall, insha’Allah, return tomorrow."

At this, a wave of happiness and joy swept through the people, and they began to pack up for the journey without any objection.

Seeing this state, the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) laughed, for those who were not ready to depart the previous day, after being wounded, were now so eager to return quickly.
