Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
(1)
فَوَلَٰي المُسلِمُونَ مُدبِرين:
The Banu Hawazin were hiding in ambush,
they suddenly attacked with such force that the Muslims who came before them fled,
the detachment of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam remained in confrontation, while the rear detachment
could not reach you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and there came a time when you, alone, quickly dismounted from your mule
and stood before the enemy.
(2)
أَصحَابُ الشَّجَرَة:
Those people who, under the acacia tree,
at the occasion of Hudaybiyyah, pledged the Bay‘at al-Ridwan to you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, and the voice of al-‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu was very thunderous and loud.
(3)
لَكَأَنَّ عَطْفَتَهُمْ حِينَ عَطْفَةُ الْبَقَرِ عَلَى أَوْلَادِهَا:
Just as a cow,
upon hearing the cry of its young calf, immediately turns towards it,
in the same way, the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum,
upon hearing the voice of al-‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu, immediately turned back, so much so that they leapt from their camels and ran towards the voice.
(4)
هَذَا حِينَ حَمِيَ الْوَطِيسُ:
“Watīs” refers to a furnace, and this expression is used when the battle becomes extremely intense.
(5)
أَرَى حَدَّهُمْ كَلِيلًا:
Their strength and power were weakening.
Benefits and Issues:
When Allah, the Exalted, granted victory to the Muslims, the Arab tribes were left astonished, and most of them laid down their arms,
but a few tribes considered this contrary to their self-respect and pride, and prepared to attack the Muslims.
Foremost among them were Hawazin and Thaqif,
along with them were the tribes of Nasr,
Jusham,
Sa‘d ibn Bakr, and some people from Banu Hilal. All these tribes belonged to Qays ‘Aylan.
When the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam received news of the enemy’s movement, he sallallahu alayhi wa sallam dispatched ‘Abdullah ibn Abi Hadard al-Aslami radi Allahu anhu with the instruction to mingle among the people, stay among them, and accurately ascertain their situation and then inform you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam.
He gathered all the information and came back to inform you of the situation, so you sallallahu alayhi wa sallam set out from Makkah towards Hunayn in Shawwal, 8 AH.
A force of twelve thousand accompanied you,
ten thousand (10,000)
were those companions who had come with you for the conquest of Makkah, and two thousand were residents of Makkah,
the majority of whom were new Muslims.
The Islamic army reached Hunayn on the 10th of Shawwal, completely unaware of the enemy’s presence,
and due to their sudden attack, the Muslims in the vanguard could not compose themselves,
so they fled.
Despite this severe stampede, your direction was towards the disbelievers and you were spurring your mule forward to advance,
then, at the voice of al-‘Abbas radi Allahu anhu, the noble Companions radi Allahu anhum returned with utmost speed.
