Aswad bin Yazid reported: It was mentioned before A'isha that will had been made (by the Holy Prophet) in favour of 'Ali (as the Prophet's first caliph), whereupon she said: When did he make will in his favour? I had been providing support to him (to the Holy Prophet) with my chest (or with my lap). He asked for a tray, when he fell in my lap (relaxing his body), and I did not realise that he had breathed his last. When did he make any will in his ('Ali's) favour?

Hadith Commentary:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
Ankhanatha:
Your limbs became slack,
You bent down.

Benefits and Issues:
The Rafidis used to propagate that Ali radi Allahu anhu was the appointed successor (wasi),
Therefore, people,
The noble Companions, were asked about this matter,
So the Companions would refute it,
Even a refutation from Ali radi Allahu anhu himself is transmitted,
He sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said on the occasion of the Battle of Jamal,
O people! The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not make any bequest to us regarding this leadership.
(Fath al-Bari,
vol. 5,
p. 444)
Maulana Mubarakpuri has transmitted in Tuhfat al-Ahwadhi,
vol. 3,
p. 230,
that people said to Ali radi Allahu anhu,
Why do you not appoint a caliph over us? He replied,
The Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did not appoint a caliph,
How can I appoint a caliph?
