Hadith Commentary:
Benefits and Issues:
Abdullah bin Awfa radi Allahu anhu thought that the questioner’s intent was to ask about a bequest (wasiyyah) regarding the caliphate for Ali radi Allahu anhu, or a bequest concerning wealth for the Ahl al-Bayt, because the Shia used to propagate this greatly. Therefore, he replied in the negative. Otherwise, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam did make bequests regarding many things. The bequest regarding the Book of Allah refers to his statement: (I have left among you two matters; you will never go astray as long as you hold fast to them: the Book of Allah), that is, I am leaving among you something, if you hold firmly to it, you will not go astray, meaning the Book of Allah.
