Jabir bin 'Abdullah reported: I heard the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) say: A section of my people will not cease fighting for the Truth and will prevail till the Day of Resurrection. He said: Jesus son of Mary would then descend and their (Muslims') commander would invite him to come and lead them in prayer, but he would say: No, some amongst you are commanders over some (amongst you). This is the honour from Allah for this Ummah.

Hadith Commentary: Benefits and Issues:
When Isa (alayhis salam) descends,
Imam Mahdi (alayhis salam) will have already stepped forward to lead the prayer in Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem).
He (Imam Mahdi) will step back and invite Isa (alayhis salam) to lead as imam,
but he (Isa alayhis salam) will not accept their invitation,
so that it becomes clear that he has descended as a follower of this religion.
When it becomes apparent that he is a member of this ummah,
then later, even if he becomes the imam, no doubt will arise.
He will rule according to the Book and the Sunnah, and will be considered as one of the individuals of this ummah.
