Shaykh Maulana Abdul Aziz Alvi
Hadith Footnote:
Vocabulary of the Hadith:
ISTAKHABATA:
"Sakhab" means noise and commotion,
the clashing of voices.
Benefits and Issues:
As long as the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) remained in Makkah al-Mukarramah,
he did not marry another woman during the lifetime of Khadijah (radi Allahu anha), and Khadijah (radi Allahu anha) herself was a previously married woman, with whom the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) married at the age of twenty-five, while she was forty years old.
After her death, in the tenth year of Prophethood, he married Sawdah (radi Allahu anha) because he was facing difficulties in managing household affairs.
Then, after the migration to Madinah, when Islam began to spread, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) married, due to religious necessities, so that close relations could be established with various families and they could become his supporters and helpers,
and so that all aspects of his domestic life would be presented before the Ummah, and through his wives, the propagation and dissemination of religion among women could take place.
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) married previously married women from different tribes at various times, to console them and to gain the affection and love of their families.
After Sawdah (radi Allahu anha), he married Aishah (radi Allahu anha), then in the third year of Hijrah, Hafsah (radi Allahu anha), and in the same year, Zaynab bint Khuzaymah (radi Allahu anha), who lived for only three months.
After her, he married Umm Salamah (radi Allahu anha), then Zaynab bint Jahsh (radi Allahu anha),
after her, Umm Habibah (radi Allahu anha),
then Juwayriyyah (radi Allahu anha), then Safiyyah (radi Allahu anha), and finally Maymunah (radi Allahu anha).
The Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) did not marry for the fulfillment of carnal desires,
because if, Allah forbid, he had been lustful, he would not have spent his youth and the prime of his life—twenty-five years—in the companionship of a forty-year-old widow,
He was not obligated to assign turns (between his wives), yet he established a schedule and adhered to it.
Generally, on the night of a wife’s turn, all the wives would gather at her place after Maghrib,
One day, a strange incident occurred: due to the darkness of the night (since lamps were not commonly used),
the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) reached out towards Aishah (radi Allahu anha) upon the arrival of Zaynab (radi Allahu anha), but she informed him that Zaynab (radi Allahu anha) had already arrived,
therefore, expressing affection and love in her presence was not appropriate.
Or, he reached out towards Zaynab (radi Allahu anha), thinking she was Aishah (radi Allahu anha), so Aishah (radi Allahu anha) said, "That is Zaynab (radi Allahu anha), and today is my turn."
Upon this, a mutual dispute arose,
which led to raised voices.
And this commotion continued until the time for the Isha prayer arrived, and in this state, Abu Bakr (radi Allahu anhu) passed by. He said, "O Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), restrain them firmly and come for the prayer."
Then, after the prayer, as Aishah (radi Allahu anha) feared, he went and reprimanded and admonished her.
