Hadith 1460
حدثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ ، وَيَعْقُوبُ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِأَبِي بَكْرٍ ، قَالُوا : حدثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ سَعِيدٍ ، عَنْ سُفْيَانَ ، عَنْ مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : لَمَّا تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ أَقَامَ عَنْدَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، وَقَالَ : " إِنَّهُ لَيْسَ بِكِ عَلَى أَهْلِكِ هَوَانٌ ، إِنْ شِئْتِ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ ، وَإِنْ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ سَبَّعْتُ لِنِسَائِي " .
'Abdul Malik bin Abu Bakr (RA) bin Abdul Rahman bin al-Harith bin Hisham reported on the authority of his father from Umm Salamah (Allah be pleased with her) that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) married Umm Salamah, he stayed with her for three nights, and said: There is no lack of estimation on the part of your husband for you. If you wish I can stay with you for a week, but in case I stay with you for a week, then I shall have to stay for a week with all my wives.

حدثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، قَالَ : قَرَأْتُ عَلَى مَالِكٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ ، عَنْ أَبِيهِ : أَنّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ وَأَصْبَحَتْ عَنْدَهُ ، قَالَ لَهَا : " لَيْسَ بِكِ عَلَى أَهْلِكِ هَوَانٌ ، إِنْ شِئْتِ سَبَّعْتُ عَنْدَكِ ، وَإِنْ شِئْتِ ثَلَّثْتُ " ، ثُمَّ دُرْتُ قَالَت : ثَلِّثْ .
Ibn Abu Bakr (RA) bin Abdul Rahman reported that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) married Umm Salamah and she stayed with him (during the night), and it was dawn, he (the Holy Prophet) said to her: There is no lack of estimation for you on the part of your husband. So if you desire I can spend a week with you, and if you like I may spend three (nights), and then I will visit you in turn. She said: Spend three (nights).

وحدثنا عَبْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مَسْلَمَةَ الْقَعَنْبِيُّ ، حدثنا سُلَيْمَانُ يَعْنِي ابْنَ بِلَالٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْمَلِكِ بْنِ أَبِي بَكْرٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ : أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حِينَ تَزَوَّجَ أُمَّ سَلَمَةَ ، فَدَخَلَ عَلَيْهَا ، فَأَرَادَ أَنْ يَخْرُجَ أَخَذَتْ بِثَوْبِهِ ، فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " إِنْ شِئْتِ زِدْتُكِ وَحَاسَبْتُكِ بِهِ لِلْبِكْرِ سَبْعٌ ، وَلِلثَّيِّبِ ثَلَاثٌ " ،
Abu Bakr (RA) bin 'Abdul Rahman reported that when Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) married Umm Salamah and he visited her, and when he intended to come out, she caught hold of his cloth, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: If you so desire, I can extend the time (of my stay) with you, but then I shall have to calculate the time (that I stay with you and shall have to spend the same time with other wives). For the virgin woman (her husband has to stay with her) for a week, and for the woman previously married it is three days.

وحدثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، أَخْبَرَنا أَبُو ضَمْرَةَ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ حُمَيْدٍ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ مِثْلَهُ .
A hadith like this has been narrated on the authority of Ibn Humaid.

حَدَّثَنِي أَبُو كُرَيْبٍ مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْعَلَاءِ ، حدثنا حَفْصٌ يَعْنِي ابْنَ غِيَاثٍ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ الْوَاحِدِ بْنِ أَيْمَنَ ، عَنْ أَبِي بَكْرِ بْنِ عَبْدِ الرَّحْمَنِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ هِشَامٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّ سَلَمَةَ : ذَكَرَ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ تَزَوَّجَهَا وَذَكَرَ أَشْيَاءَ هَذَا فِيهِ ، قَالَ : " إِنْ شِئْتِ أَنْ أُسَبِّعَ لَكِ ، وَأُسَبِّعَ لِنِسَائِي ، وَإِنْ سَبَّعْتُ لَكِ ، سَبَّعْتُ لِنِسَائِي " .
Umm Salamah (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) married her, and he (the narrator) made mention of so many things in this connection (and one of them was this) that he said: If you desire that I spend a week with you, I shall have to spend a week with my (other) wives, and if spend a week with you, I shall have to spend a week with my (other) wives.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The name of Umm al-Mu’minin (Mother of the Believers) Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha was Hind bint Abi Umayyah. She was married to Abu Salamah. Abu Salamah’s name was Abdullah bin Abd al-Asad; he was the son of Barrah bint Abd al-Muttalib, who was the paternal aunt of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam. When he passed away in the 4th year of Hijrah, the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam married Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha.
➋ If the bride is a thayyib (widow or divorcee), it is also permissible to stay with her for seven days, but in this case, the husband must also stay seven days with each of the other wife or wives before starting the regular rotation.
➌ In response to this offer from the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam, Umm al-Mu’minin Umm Salamah radi Allahu anha chose a period of three days. (Sahih Muslim, al-Rada’, Chapter: The amount of time a virgin and a thayyib are entitled to have the husband stay with them after marriage, Hadith: 1460)
➍ The likely reason for this is that in this way, there was hope of receiving her turn sooner. It is necessary, within the bounds of the Shari’ah, to take into consideration the feelings of the wives.
