باب فِي الْمَصَّةِ وَالْمَصَّتَيْنِ:Chapter: One or Two sucks
Hadith 1451
حدثنا يَحْيَى بْنُ يَحْيَى ، وَعَمْرٌو النَّاقِدُ ، وإسحاق بن إبراهيم ، كلهم عَنِ الْمُعْتَمِرِ ، وَاللَّفْظُ لِيَحْيَى : أَخْبَرَنا الْمُعْتَمِرُ بْنُ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنْ أَيُّوبَ ، يُحَدِّثُ عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ ، قَالَت : دَخَلَ أَعْرَابِيٌّ عَلَى نَبِيِّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَهُوَ فِي بَيْتِي ، فقَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، إِنِّي كَانَتْ لِي امْرَأَةٌ ، فَتَزَوَّجْتُ عَلَيْهَا أُخْرَى ، فَزَعَمَتِ امْرَأَتِي الْأُولَى أَنَّهَا أَرْضَعَتِ امْرَأَتِي الْحُدْثَى رَضْعَةً أَوْ رَضْعَتَيْنِ ، فقَالَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَا تُحَرِّمُ الْإِمْلَاجَةُ وَالْإِمْلَاجَتَانِ " ، قَالَ عَمْرٌ وَفِي رِوَايَتِهِ : عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ .
Umm al-Fadl reported: A bedouin came to Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) when he was in my house and said: Allah's Apostle, I have had a wife and I married another besides her, and my first wife claimed that she had suckled once or twice my newly married wife, thereupon Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: One suckling or two do not make the (marriage) unlawful.

وحَدَّثَنِي أَبُو غَسَّانَ الْمِسْمَعِيُّ ، حدثنا مُعَاذٌ . ح وحدثنا ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَا : حدثنا مُعَاذُ بْنُ هِشَامٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي أَبِي ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ صَالِحِ بْنِ أَبِي مَرْيَمَ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ : أَنَّ رَجُلًا مِنْ بَنِي عَامِرِ بْنِ صَعْصَعَةَ ، قَالَ : يَا نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ ، " هَلْ تُحَرِّمُ الرَّضْعَةُ الْوَاحِدَةُ ، قَالَ : " لَا " .
Umm Fadl (Allah be pleased with her) reported that a person from Banu 'Amir bin Sa'sa said: Allah's Apostle, does one suckling make the (marriage) unlawful? He said: No.

حدثنا أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، حدثنا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ بِشْرٍ ، حدثنا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، أَنَّ أُمَّ الْفَضْلِ ، حَدَّثَتْ : أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم ، قَالَ : " لَا تُحَرِّمُ الرَّضْعَةُ أَوِ الرَّضْعَتَانِ ، أَوِ الْمَصَّةُ أَوِ الْمَصَّتَانِ " ،
Umm Fadl (Allah be pleased with her) reported that Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) said: Being suckled once or twice, or one suckling or two, do not make marriage unlawful.

وحدثناه أَبُو بَكْرِ بْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، وَإِسْحَاقَ بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، جَمِيعًا عَنْ عَبْدَةَ بْنِ سُلَيْمَانَ ، عَنِ ابْنِ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، بِهَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، أَمَّا إِسْحَاقَ ، فقَالَ كَرِوَايَةِ ابْنِ بِشْرٍ : أَوِ الرَّضْعَتَانِ أَوِ الْمَصَّتَانِ ، وَأَمَّا ابْنُ أَبِي شَيْبَةَ ، فقَالَ : وَالرَّضْعَتَانِ وَالْمَصَّتَانِ .
In the narration transmitted on the authority of Ibn Bishr there is a mention of two sucklings and Ibn Abu Shaiba has narrated it with a small variation of wording.

وحدثنا ابْنُ أَبِي عُمَرَ ، حدثنا بِشْرُ بْنُ السَّرِيِّ ، حدثنا حَمَّادُ بْنُ سَلَمَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ بْنِ نَوْفَلٍ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ ، عَنِ النَّبِيِّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّم ، قَالَ : " لَا تُحَرِّمُ الْإِمْلَاجَةُ وَالْإِمْلَاجَتَانِ " .
Umm Fadl (Allah be pleased with her) reported Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) having said this: One or two sucklings do not make (the marriage) unlawful.

حَدَّثَنِي أَحْمَدُ بْنُ سَعِيدٍ الدَّارِمِيُّ ، حدثنا حَبَّانُ ، حدثنا هَمَّامٌ ، حدثنا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْخَلِيلِ ، عَنْ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الْحَارِثِ ، عَنْ أُمِّ الْفَضْلِ : سَأَلَ رَجُلٌ النَّبِيَّ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ أَتُحَرِّمُ الْمَصَّةُ ؟ فقَالَ : " لَا " .
Umm Fadl (Allah be pleased with her) reported that a person asked Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) : Does one suckling make (the marriage) unlawful? He said: No.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ The Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated this blessed saying in response to a question from a man. This incident is narrated in detail in Sahih Muslim. Umm al-Fadl (radi Allahu anha) said: The Prophet of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) was present in my house when a Bedouin came to him. He said: O Prophet of Allah! I had a woman in my marriage, and while she was still with me, I married another woman. My first wife claims that she has breastfed my new wife once or twice. At that, the Prophet (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam) stated the above-mentioned ruling. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Rada‘, Chapter: Regarding One Suckling and Two Sucklings, Hadith: 1451)
Some scholars have deduced from this hadith that the rulings of breastfeeding (rada‘ah) are established by three instances of suckling, meaning that the milk relationship is established. However, the correct view is that prohibition (of marriage) is established by five instances of suckling, as narrated in Sahih Muslim from Aisha (radi Allahu anha) that initially, the ruling of prohibition through breastfeeding was revealed in the Qur’an for ten instances of suckling, then it was abrogated and the ruling was revealed for five instances of suckling. (Sahih Muslim, Kitab al-Rada‘, Chapter: Prohibition by Five Sucklings, Hadith: 1452)

This narration is authentic and explicit that the prohibition of suckling (raḍā‘ah) is not established by one or two instances of breastfeeding, rather it requires more instances. In view of the previous hadith, the maximum intended is five times, so that all the ahadith can be acted upon.
