وحَدَّثَنِي
زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حدثنا
يَزِيدُ بْنُ هَارُونَ ، أَخْبَرَنَا
الرَّبِيعُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ الْقُرَشِيُّ ، عَنْ
مُحَمَّدِ بْنِ زِيَادٍ ، عَنْ
أَبِي هُرَيْرَةَ ، قَالَ : خَطَبَنَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، فقَالَ : " أَيُّهَا النَّاسُ قَدْ فَرَضَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْكُمُ الْحَجَّ فَحُجُّوا " ، فقَالَ رَجُلٌ : أَكُلَّ عَامٍ يَا رَسُولَ اللَّهِ ؟ ، فَسَكَتَ حَتَّى قَالَهَا ثَلَاثًا ، فقَالَ رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ : " لَوْ قُلْتُ : نَعَمْ ، لَوَجَبَتْ وَلَمَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ ، ثُمَّ قَالَ : ذَرُونِي مَا تَرَكْتُكُمْ ، فَإِنَّمَا هَلَكَ مَنْ كَانَ قَبْلَكُمْ بِكَثْرَةِ سُؤَالِهِمْ وَاخْتِلَافِهِمْ عَلَى أَنْبِيَائِهِمْ ، فَإِذَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِشَيْءٍ فَأْتُوا مِنْهُ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ ، وَإِذَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَدَعُوهُ " .
Abu Hurairah (RA) reported: Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) addressed us and said: O people, Allah has made Hajj obligatory for you; so perform Hajj. Thereupon a person said: Messenger of Allah, (is it to be performed) every year? He (the Holy Prophet) kept quiet, and he repeated (these words) thrice, whereupon Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) said: If I were to say "Yes," it would become obligatory (for you to perform it every year) and you would not be able to do it. Then he said: Leave me with what I have left to you, for those who were before you were destroyed because of excessive questioning, and their opposition to their apostles. So when I command you to do anything, do it as much as it lies in your power and when I forbid you to do anything, then abandon it.

Abu Hurairah (RA) reported that he heard Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) as saying: Avoid that which I forbid you to do and do that which I command you to do to the best of your capacity. Verily the people before you went to their doom because they had put too many questions to their Prophets and then disagreed with their teachings.

Abu Bakr ibn Abi Shaybah and Abu Kurayb narrated to us, they said: Abu Mu'awiyah narrated to us. (H) And Ibn Numayr narrated to us, my father narrated to us, both of them from Al-A'mash, from Abu Salih, from Abu Hurayrah. (H) And Qutaybah ibn Sa'id narrated to us, Al-Mughira—meaning Al-Hizami—narrated to us. (H) And Ibn Abi 'Umar narrated to us, Sufyan narrated to us, both of them from Abu Al-Zinad, from Al-A'raj, from Abu Hurayrah. (H) And Ubaydullah ibn Mu'adh narrated to us, my father narrated to us, Shu'bah narrated to us, from Muhammad ibn Ziyad, he heard Abu Hurayrah. (H) And Muhammad ibn Rafi' narrated to us, 'Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma'mar informed us, from Hammam ibn Munabbih, from Abu Hurayrah—all of them said, from the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him:
"Leave me as long as I leave you; and in the narration of Hammam: as long as you are left. Indeed, those before you were destroyed only because of their excessive questioning and their disagreement with their prophets." Then they mentioned something similar to the hadith of Az-Zuhri, from Sa'id and Abu Salamah, from Abu Hurayrah.

Benefits and Issues:
➊ A command (amr) demands the performance of the commanded action, and for its fulfillment, performing it once is sufficient; it is not necessary to repeat it multiple times. The correct view is this: however, if there is an indication or evidence that points to repetition, then it must be performed repeatedly.
➋ And the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “Leave me as long as I leave you (ذَرُونِي مَا تَرَكْتُكُمْ)” is evidence that no ruling becomes obligatory in the Shari’ah without a specific command being revealed. That is, if the Shari’ah remains silent or refrains from mentioning something, then doing that thing is permissible—unless that action contradicts any ruling of the Shari’ah.
➌ Likewise, the statement of the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam: “When I command you to do something, do of it as much as you are able (فَإِذَا أَمَرْتُكُمْ بِالشَّيْءِ فَخُذُوا بِهِ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْ)” is evidence that a person is obligated to act according to his ability and capacity. For example, if he cannot perform ablution (wudu), he should perform dry ablution (tayammum); if he cannot pray standing, he should pray sitting; if he cannot prevent evil with his strength and power, he should prevent it with his tongue; if he cannot prevent it with his tongue, then he should reflect in his heart on ways to remove it.
➍ Similarly, the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam said: “And when I forbid you from something, then avoid it (وَإِذَا نَهَيْتُكُمْ عَنْ شَيْءٍ فَدَعُوهُ),” from which it is understood that one should completely abstain from evil. Because performing an action requires effort and hardship, but refraining from it is not as difficult or demanding, therefore, one should fully act upon this and avoid committing it.
