Hadith 1226
وحَدَّثَنَا زُهَيْرُ بْنُ حَرْبٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا الْجُرَيْرِيُّ ، عَنْ أَبِي الْعَلَاءِ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ : " إِنِّي لَأُحَدِّثُكَ بِالْحَدِيثِ الْيَوْمَ يَنْفَعُكَ اللَّهُ بِهِ بَعْدَ الْيَوْمِ ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ أَعْمَرَ طَائِفَةً مِنْ أَهْلِهِ فِي الْعَشْرِ ، فَلَمْ تَنْزِلْ آيَةٌ تَنْسَخُ ذَلِكَ ، وَلَمْ يَنْهَ عَنْهُ حَتَّى مَضَى لِوَجْهِهِ ، ارْتَأَى كُلُّ امْرِئٍ بَعْدُ مَا شَاءَ أَنْ يَرْتَئِيَ " ،
Mutarrif reported: 'Imran bin Husain said to me: Should I not narrate to you a hadith today by which Allah will benefit you subsequently-and bear in mind that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) made some members of his family perform 'Umrah within ten days of Dhu'l-Hijja. No verse was revealed to abrogate that, and he (the Holy Prophet) did not refrain from doing it till he died. So after him everyone said as he liked, (but it would be his personal opinion and not the verdict of the Shari'ah).

وحَدَّثَنَاه إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ حَاتِمٍ كِلَاهُمَا ، عَنْ وَكِيعٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا سُفْيَانُ ، عَنِ الْجُرَيْرِيِّ فِي هَذَا الْإِسْنَادِ ، وقَالَ ابْنُ حَاتِمٍ فِي رِوَايَتِهِ " ارْتَأَى رَجُلٌ بِرَأْيِهِ مَا شَاءَ " ، يَعْنِي عُمَرَ .
This hadith been narrated on the authority of Jurairi with the same chain of transmitters, and Ibn Hatim said in his narration: "A person said according to his personal opinion, and it was Umar."

وحَدَّثَنِي وحَدَّثَنِي عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ مُعَاذٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا أَبِي ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ : " أُحَدِّثُكَ حَدِيثًا عَسَى اللَّهُ أَنْ يَنْفَعَكَ بِهِ ، إِنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَمَعَ بَيْنَ حَجَّةٍ وَعُمْرَةٍ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْهَ عَنْهُ حَتَّى مَاتَ وَلَمْ يَنْزِلْ فِيهِ قُرْآنٌ يُحَرِّمُهُ ، وَقَدْ كَانَ يُسَلَّمُ عَلَيَّ حَتَّى اكْتَوَيْتُ ، فَتُرِكْتُ ثُمَّ تَرَكْتُ الْكَيَّ فَعَادَ " ،
Imran bin Husain reported: I am narrating to you a hadith by which Allah will benefit you (and the hadith is) that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) combined Hajj and 'Umrah, and he did not forbid (this combination) till he died. (Moreover) nothing was revealed in the Holy Qur'an which forbade it. And I was always blessed till I was branded and then it (blessing) was abandoned. I then abandoned branding and it (the blessing was restored).

وحَدَّثَنَاه مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، حَدَّثَنَا شُعْبَةُ ، عَنْ حُمَيْدِ بْنِ هِلَالٍ ، قَالَ : سَمِعْتُ مُطَرِّفًا ، قَالَ : قَالَ لِي عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ : بِمِثْلِ حَدِيثِ مُعَاذٍ .
This hadith has been narrated on the authority of Mutarrif with the same chain of transmitters.

وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، وَابْنُ بَشَّارٍ ، قَالَ ابْنُ الْمُثَنَّى : حَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ جَعْفَرٍ ، عَنْ شُعْبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، قَالَ : بَعَثَ إِلَيَّ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ فِي مَرَضِهِ الَّذِي تُوُفِّيَ فِيهِ ، فَقَالَ : " إِنِّي كُنْتُ مُحَدِّثَكَ بِأَحَادِيثَ لَعَلَّ اللَّهَ أَنْ يَنْفَعَكَ بِهَا بَعْدِي ، فَإِنْ عِشْتُ فَاكْتُمْ عَنِّي ، وَإِنْ مُتُّ فَحَدِّثْ بِهَا إِنْ شِئْتَ ، إِنَّهُ قَدْ سُلِّمَ عَلَيَّ ، وَاعْلَمْ أَنَّ نَبِيَّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ قَدْ جَمَعَ بَيْنَ حَجٍّ وَعُمْرَةٍ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْزِلْ فِيهَا كِتَابُ اللَّهِ ، وَلَمْ يَنْهَ عَنْهَا نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ رَجُلٌ فِيهَا بِرَأْيِهِ مَا شَاءَ " .
Mutarrif reported: 'Imran bin Husain sent for me during his illness of which he died, and said: I am narrating to you some ahadith which may benefit you after me. If I live you conceal (the fact that these have been transmitted by me), and if I die, then you narrate them if you like (and these are): I am blessed, and bear in mind that the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) combined Hajj and 'Umrah. Then no verse was revealed in regard to it in the Book of Allah (which abrogated it) and the Apostle of Allah (ﷺ) did not forbid (from doing it). And whatever a person (Umar) said was out of his personal opinion.

وحَدَّثَنَا إِسْحَاق بْنُ إِبْرَاهِيمَ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِيسَى بْنُ يُونُسَ ، حَدَّثَنَا سَعِيدُ بْنُ أَبِي عَرُوبَةَ ، عَنْ قَتَادَةَ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ الْحُصَيْنِ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " اعْلَمْ أَنَّ رَسُولَ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ جَمَعَ بَيْنَ حَجٍّ وَعُمْرَةٍ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ يَنْزِلْ فِيهَا كِتَابٌ وَلَمْ يَنْهَنَا عَنْهُمَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، قَالَ فِيهَا رَجُلٌ بِرَأْيِهِ مَا شَاءَ " .
'Imran bin al-Husain (RA) said: Know well that Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) combined 'Hajj and 'Umrah, and nothing was revealed in the Book (to abrogate it), and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) too did not forbid us from (combining) them. And whatever a person said was out of his personal opinion.

وحَدَّثَنَا مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ الْمُثَنَّى ، حَدَّثَنِي عَبْدُ الصَّمَدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا هَمَّامٌ ، حَدَّثَنَا قَتَادَةُ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفٍ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ ، قَالَ : " تَمَتَّعْنَا مَعَ رَسُولِ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَلَمْ يَنْزِلْ فِيهِ الْقُرْآنُ ، قَالَ رَجُلٌ بِرَأْيِهِ مَا شَاءَ " ،
'Imran bin Husain (RA) reported: We performed Tamattu' (Hajj and 'Umrah combining together) in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) , and nothing was revealed in the Qur'an (concerning the abrogation of this practice), and whatever a person (Hadhrat 'Umar) said was his personal opinion. 'Imran bin Husain narrated this hadith (in these words also): "Allah's Apostle (ﷺ) performed Hajj Tamattu' and we also performed it along with him."

وحَدَّثَنِيهِ حَجَّاجُ بْنُ الشَّاعِرِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عُبَيْدُ اللَّهِ بْنُ عَبْدِ الْمَجِيدِ ، حَدَّثَنَا إِسْمَاعِيل بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، حَدَّثَنِي مُحَمَّدُ بْنُ وَاسِعٍ ، عَنْ مُطَرِّفِ بْنِ عَبْدِ اللَّهِ بْنِ الشِّخِّيرِ ، عَنْ عِمْرَانَ بْنِ حُصَيْنٍ رَضِيَ اللَّهُ عَنْهُ بِهَذَا الْحَدِيثِ ، قَالَ : " تَمَتَّعَ نَبِيُّ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ وَتَمَتَّعْنَا مَعَهُ " .
'Imran bin Husain said: There was revealed the verse of Tamattu' in Hajj in the Book of Allah and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) commanded us to perform it. and then no verse was revealed abrogating the Tamattu' (form of Hajj), and the Messenger of Allah (ﷺ) did not forbid to do it till he died. So whatever a person said was his personal opinion. A hadith like this is transmitted on the authority of Imran bin Husain, but with this variation that he ('Imran) said: We did that (Tamattu') in the company of Allah's Messenger (ﷺ) and he did not say anything but he (the Holy Prophet) commanded us to do it.

حَدَّثَنَا حَامِدُ بْنُ عُمَرَ الْبَكْرَاوِيُّ ، وَمُحَمَّدُ بْنُ أَبِي بَكْرٍ الْمُقَدَّمِيُّ ، قَالَا : حَدَّثَنَا بِشْرُ بْنُ الْمُفَضَّلِ ، حَدَّثَنَا عِمْرَانُ بْنُ مُسْلِمٍ ، عَنْ أَبِي رَجَاءٍ ، قَالَ : قَالَ عِمْرَانُ بْنُ حُصَيْنٍ : " نَزَلَتْ آيَةُ الْمُتْعَةِ فِي كِتَابِ اللَّهِ يَعْنِي مُتْعَةَ الْحَجِّ ، وَأَمَرَنَا بِهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ ، ثُمَّ لَمْ تَنْزِلْ آيَةٌ تَنْسَخُ آيَةَ مُتْعَةِ الْحَجِّ ، وَلَمْ يَنْهَ عَنْهَا رَسُولُ اللَّهِ صَلَّى اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ وَسَلَّمَ حَتَّى مَاتَ ، قَالَ رَجُلٌ : بِرَأْيِهِ بَعْدُ مَا شَاءَ " ،

Benefits and Issues:

Perhaps there may be benefit in the future life.
This was said because Umar radi Allahu anhu did not prefer Hajj Tamattu‘, so it was not appropriate at that time to oppose him, since Hajj Qiran is also permissible. However, later on, you may perform Hajj Tamattu‘ and also inform others of the ruling that it is permissible.

By the “members of the household of the Messenger of Allah sallallahu alayhi wa sallam” is meant the pure wives radi Allahu anhunna.
Aishah radi Allahu anha said:
When we (came to Makkah), we performed Tawaf of the Ka‘bah (and Sa‘i),
then the Prophet sallallahu alayhi wa sallam ordered that whoever had not brought a sacrificial animal should exit from ihram.
So those who had not brought a sacrificial animal exited from ihram. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of Hajj, Chapter: At-Tamattu‘, Qiran, and Ifrad in Hajj... Hadith: 1561)
Asma bint Abi Bakr radi Allahu anha and her husband Zubair radi Allahu anhu also performed Hajj Tamattu‘. (Sahih al-Bukhari, Book of ‘Umrah, Chapter: When does the ‘Umrah performer exit from ihram, Hadith: 794)

The fatwa of abstaining from Hajj Tamattu‘ was that of Umar radi Allahu anhu.
Abdullah bin Zubair radi Allahu anhu also held the same position. (Sahih Muslim, Book of Hajj, Chapter: On Mut‘ah of Hajj, Hadith: 1217)
There is a narration regarding Uthman radi Allahu anhu that he used to prohibit it. (Muwatta’ Imam Malik, Book of Hajj, Chapter: Qiran in Hajj: 1/203)
But this hadith is weak.
They did not consider Hajj Qiran or Tamattu‘ to be impermissible.
Rather, they said that there should be a separate journey for ‘Umrah, so that it does not happen that everyone performs ‘Umrah along with Hajj and then leaves, and the Ka‘bah remains deserted for the rest of the year.
