Benefits and Issues:
All matters of a Muslim’s life—acts of worship and dealings—should be based on righteous intention (niyyah salihah).
One should not eat the pre-dawn meal (suhoor) during fasting merely out of concern for enduring hunger and thirst throughout the day.
Rather, one should eat with the intention that it is obedience to Allah and the Sunnah of the Messenger of Allah (sallallahu alayhi wa sallam), and also as a means of distinction from the People of the Book (Ahl al-Kitab).
And this is the explanation of the well-known hadith, namely (Innamal a‘malu bin-niyyat) — “Actions are only by intentions.” Through righteous and pure intention, the reward of the deed increases greatly.
And it is also an important requirement of the Shari‘ah that Muslims, as a community, should be distinct from other nations not only in their acts of worship but also in their customs.
