It is narrated from Hazrat Sha’bi that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to engage in Mubahala with the people of Najran, they agreed to pay Jizya to him. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Indeed, a bearer of glad tidings informed me of the destruction of the people of Najran. If these people had fully participated in the Mubahala, even the birds on the trees … or … he said … even the sparrows on the trees (would have perished).” And when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was going towards the people of Najran, he was holding the hands of Hasan and Husain, and Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) was walking behind him.

And Hazrat Umar made this agreement with them: if they themselves provide the vines and ploughing equipment, then they will receive two-thirds of the produce and Hazrat Umar will receive one-third; and if Hazrat Umar provides the seeds, then they will receive half the share. And Hazrat Umar made an agreement with them regarding dates on the condition that one-fifth of the produce would be theirs and four-fifths would belong to Hazrat Umar ... and regarding grapes, he made an agreement with them on the condition that their share would be one-third and Hazrat Umar's share would be two-thirds.

It is narrated from Hazrat Salim that when the number of the people of Najran reached forty thousand... the narrator says: Hazrat Umar feared that they might attack the Muslims. Then (by coincidence) mutual jealousy arose among them. The narrator says: These people came to Hazrat Umar and said, "Mutual jealousy has arisen among us, so please exile us..." The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, had written a document for them that they would not be exiled. The narrator says: Hazrat Umar considered this a blessing and exiled them. After that, the people of Najran regretted it and came to him and said, "We apologize for what we said." Hazrat Umar refused to accept their apology. Then when Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, arrived, these people came to Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, and said, "We ask you, by the document written by your hand and by your kinship, to accept our apology." But Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, also refused and said, "You are doomed. Hazrat Umar was a man of insight." Salim the narrator says: The opinion of the elders is that if Hazrat Ali, may Allah be pleased with him, had objected to anything of Hazrat Umar, he would have objected to him regarding the people of Najran.

So the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to wait for this matter. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Ubaidah bin Al-Jarrah! Stand up." Until I presented myself before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and asked him this question, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: “Why did you not tell them that those people used to name themselves after the names of the previous prophets and the righteous?”

The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "You are lying. Three things have prevented you from Islam: your claim that Allah has a son, your eating of pork, and your drinking of wine."
