Hadith 39756
Hazrat Abu Ishaq narrates that a man said to Hazrat Bara: "O Abu Amarah! Did you people turn your backs on the day of Hunain?" Hazrat Bara said: "I testify about the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he did not turn his back. But some people, in haste and empty-handed, advanced towards the tribe of Hawazin, even though the Hawazin were a nation of archers. So they showered that (empty-handed) group with arrows from their swift-shooting bows, and it seemed as if a whole collection of arrows was coming. The narrator says: So the people scattered, and at that time the people of Hawazin advanced towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), while Abu Sufyan was driving the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mule. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and called for help, and he was saying: 'I am not a false prophet. I am the son of Abdul Muttalib. O Allah! Send down Your help.' The narrator says: By God! When the battle was at its fiercest, we would take cover behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) for our protection. And certainly, at that time, the brave one was the person who stood with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)."
Hadith 39757
It is narrated from Hazrat Bara that, by God, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not turn his back on the day of the Battle of Hunain. The narrator says: Hazrat Abbas and Abu Sufyan were holding the reins of the mule of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying, "I am not a false prophet; I am the son of Abdul Muttalib."
Hadith 39758
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that on the day of Hunain, the supplication of the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) was: "O Allah! If You will, then after today You will not be worshipped."
Hadith 39759
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that on the day of Hunayn, the tribes of Hawazin and Ghatafan gathered a very large number against the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was also accompanied that day by ten thousand or even more people. The narrator says: The Tulaqa (those who became Muslim at the conquest of Makkah) were also with him (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: The enemy had brought their wealth, livestock, wives, and children with them and had left them behind. So when the two groups confronted each other, some people fled. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was riding a white mule that day. The narrator says: He (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted and said: "I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger." The narrator says: On that day, he (peace and blessings be upon him) called out this statement twice and did not mix any other words with it. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his right and called out, "O group of Ansar!" The Ansar replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We are present, we are with you." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to his left and called out, "O group of Ansar!" The Ansar replied, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We are present, we are with you." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted to the ground and (again) confronted the enemy, so the enemy was defeated and the Muslims obtained many spoils. Thus, he (peace and blessings be upon him) gave these spoils to the Tulaqa and distributed them among them. (Upon this) the Ansar said, "In times of hardship, we are called upon, and the spoils are distributed to others besides us." This matter reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he (peace and blessings be upon him) gathered all the Ansar and sat with them in a tent and said: "O group of Ansar! What is this that has reached me from you?" The Ansar Companions remained silent. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O group of Ansar! If people walk on a wide and clear path and the Ansar walk in a mountain pass, I will choose the pass of the Ansar (to walk in)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Are you not pleased that other people take the world (its goods) and you take Allah's Messenger and bring him to your homes?" The Ansar said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We are pleased, we are pleased." Ibn Awn says that Hisham bin Zaid says: I asked Hazrat Anas, "Were you present at that time?" He replied, "Where else would I have been at that time?"
Hadith 39760
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that Hazrat Talha came to the service of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) on the day of Hunain and began to make him laugh and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Did you not see Umm Sulaym, she has a knife in her hand." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked Umm Sulaym, "O Umm Sulaym! What do you intend to do with this knife?" Umm Sulaym replied, "My intention is that if any enemy comes near me, I will stab him with this knife."
Hadith 39761
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said on the day of the Battle of Hunain: "Whoever kills someone, then the belongings of the slain will go to the killer." Accordingly, Hazrat Abu Talha killed twenty men that day and obtained their belongings.
Hadith 39762
It is narrated from Hazrat Talha bin Musarrif that on the day of Hunain, when the Muslims were defeated, they were called out: "O people of Surah Al-Baqarah!" The narrator says: Then the companions returned, and the sound of their weeping could be heard.
Hadith 39763
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Buraidah that on the day of the Battle of Hunain, the people deserted the Noble Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and only one man remained with him, whose name was Zaid. And he was holding the reins of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) brown mule... This was the same mule that Najashi had gifted to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)... The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to Zaid, “May you perish, O Zaid! Call the people.” So Zaid called out, “O people! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is calling you.” But no one responded to Zaid at that time. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “May you perish! Call the Aws and Khazraj specifically.” So Hazrat Zaid called out, “O people of Aws and Khazraj! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) is calling you.” But even then, no one responded to Zaid. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (then) said, “May you perish. Call the Muhajireen, for there is the pledge of allegiance to Allah upon their necks.” The narrator says: Hazrat Buraidah told me that a thousand people from among the people turned back, who had broken and thrown away their scabbards. Then these people came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) (and fought) until they were granted victory over the disbelievers.
Hadith 39765
Hazrat Umar Mawla Ghafra narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, dismounted from the mule he was riding and began calling out to the people: "O people of Surah Baqarah! ... O those who pledged allegiance under the tree! I am the Messenger of Allah (will these) people turn their backs and leave?"
Hadith 39766
Hazrat Ismail bin Abi Khalid narrates that I saw Abdullah bin Abi Awfa, and there were marks of a wound on his hand, so I asked, "What is this?" He replied, "On the day of the Battle of Hunain, this hand of mine was struck." Ismail says, "I asked him: Were you present at Hunain with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him?" He replied, "Yes!"
Hadith 39767
Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubaidah narrates that after the Battle of Hunain, some people from the tribe of Hawazin came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have a request from you." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, "What is your request? Is it regarding lineage (relatives) or wealth?" They replied, "(Not in wealth) but in lineage, in mothers and daughters. As for wealth, Allah Almighty will give us that again." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Whatever is in my possession and in the possession of Banu Hashim, I will return it, and for the rest, I will intercede for you with the people after I have performed the prayer, InshaAllah. So you stand up and say such and such." Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) taught them what they were to say. So they said exactly what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had instructed them to say, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) interceded for them. Thus, whatever women were in the possession of the Muslims were all returned by the Muslims, except for Aqra bin Habis and Uyaina bin Hisn. The women who were with these two, they kept with themselves.
Hadith 39768
Hazrat Hakam bin Utaybah narrates that when, on the day of the Battle of Hunayn, many people fled from the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), he said: "I am not a false prophet; I am the son of Abdul Muttalib." The narrator says: Then only four men remained with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Three men were from Banu Hashim and one man was from others. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Abi Talib and Hazrat Abbas were in front of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Hazrat Abu Sufyan was holding the reins of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) mule. And Ibn Mas’ud was on the left side of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: Any disbeliever who advanced towards the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was killed. The polytheists lay slain around the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 39769
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave Aqra’ bin Habis one hundred camels from the spoils of Hunain, and he also gave Uyainah bin Hisn one hundred camels. Some people from among the Ansar said, “The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) has given our (acquired) spoils to such people whose (relatives’) blood is still wet on our swords, or whose swords are still wet with the blood of our (relatives)?” This statement reached the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he sent a messenger to those Ansar. Accordingly, all those Ansar came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he asked them, “Is there anyone among you besides your (Ansar’s) own people?” They replied, “No! But our nephews (are with us).” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “The nephews of a people are also part of the people.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Did you people say this statement? Are you not pleased that other people take away sheep and camels, and you return to your homes with Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)?” The Ansar replied, “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Why not!” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “People are like the outer garment, and the Ansar are like the inner garment close to the body. The Ansar are my sincere friends and confidants, and if there had been no migration, I would have been one of the Ansar.”
Hadith 39770
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Ubaidah that on the day of the Battle of Hunain, Abu Sufyan, Hakim bin Hizam, and Safwan bin Umayyah set out (with the intention) to see who would be defeated. (During this time) a Bedouin passed by them, so they asked him, "O Abdullah! What happened to the people?" He replied, "Muhammad can never go beyond Hunain." The narrator says: This was the impression at the time when the companions of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had dispersed from him... So some of them said to others, "It is more beloved to us that someone from the Quraysh becomes a chief than that someone from among the Bedouins becomes a chief." Then one of them said to another, "O so-and-so! Go and bring us some news." The narrator says: That man set out until, when he reached among the people, he heard them saying, "O Aws, O Khazraj!" They rose above the people. That was the slogan of them and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Hadith 39771
It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed the captives at the place of Ji’ranah, he gave captives to the Quraish and others, but from among those captives, he did not give anything to the Ansar companions. Many things were said and spread about this, until someone said: “O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you have joined your own people.” The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubadah and inquired, “What is this that has reached me from your side, which they are saying so much?” The narrator says: He replied, “Surely, something must have happened which has reached you.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “What do you say about it?” He replied, “I am only one individual from my people.” The narrator says: The anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) increased, and he said, “Gather your people, and let no one else (from another tribe) be with them.” The narrator says: Hazrat Sa’d gathered the Ansar in one enclosure among the enclosures of the captives, and he himself stood at the door of that enclosure, and whoever came from his people, he allowed them (to enter), and he also allowed some of the Muhajireen (to enter), and sent some back. The narrator says: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived, and anger was apparent on his blessed face. He said, “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you astray, and then Allah guided you?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger.” “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you poor, and then Allah made you rich?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).” “O group of Ansar! Did I not find you (mutually) enemies, and then Allah joined your hearts together?” The Ansar said, “We seek refuge in Allah from the anger of Allah and His Messenger.” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked, “Why do you not answer?” The Ansar said, “Allah and His Messenger are greater benefactors.” Then, when the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) (state of anger) subsided, he said: “If you wished, you could have said, and you would have spoken the truth, and you would have been believed: ‘Did we not find you expelled, and then we gave you shelter? And did we not find you denied, and then we affirmed you? And did we not find you poor, and then we supported you? And did we not find you helpless, and then we helped you?’” At this, the Ansar began to weep and said, “Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are greater benefactors and more virtuous.” “Have you felt something about this worldly thing which I gave to a people so that I could strengthen them in Islam… and I entrusted you to your Islam (meaning you are firm in faith)? If all people were to walk in one valley or mountain pass, and you Ansar were to walk in another valley or mountain pass, surely I would walk in your valley or mountain pass. You are like the inner garment close to the body, and the rest of the people are like the outer garment. And if there had been no migration, I would have been one of the Ansar. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) raised both his hands until the part under his shoulders (armpits) became visible, and he prayed: ‘O Allah! Forgive the Ansar, and forgive the children of the Ansar, and forgive the children of the children of the Ansar. Are you not pleased that other people take away sheep and camels, and you return to your homes with the Messenger of Allah?’” At this, all the companions began to weep until their beards became wet, and they returned saying, “We are pleased with Allah as our Lord and with the share and portion of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).”
Hadith 39772
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdur Rahman al-Fahri. He says: I was with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) in the Battle of Hunayn. We marched on an extremely hot day, then we camped under the shade of trees. When the sun had declined, I put on my battle gear and mounted my horse and proceeded towards the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He was in his tent. I went and said: Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah. Departure! Is it time to depart? He (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Yes. Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Bilal! So he too got up, dusting off the twigs of a tree whose shade was like the shade of a bird. And he came and said: May I be sacrificed for you. I am present. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Saddle my horse. So Hazrat Bilal brought out a saddle whose sides were covered with grass. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Bilal saddled the horse. 2. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) also mounted, and we mounted as well, and we lined up before him day and night, and the horsemen of the Muslims and the disbelievers clashed with each other. As Allah Almighty says... the Muslims turned their backs and fled. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) called out: "O servants of Allah! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger (present)." Then he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O group of Muhajireen! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger (present)." Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) dismounted his horse and took a handful of dust... The companion who was closer to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) than me told me that he (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) threw this dust towards their faces and said: "May the faces be disfigured." The narrator says: Thus Allah Almighty defeated the polytheists. 3. Ya'la (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Ata says: The sons of the opponents narrated to me from the authority of their fathers that none of us was saved except that his eyes and mouth were filled with dust, and we heard a sound between the sky and the earth like the sound of a bell, as if iron was being struck on an iron plate.
Hadith 39774
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the tribe of Hawazin, on the occasion of the Battle of Hunayn, brought along their children, women, camels, and goats, and gathered them in rows so that they would appear more numerous before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). When the confrontation took place, and as Allah Almighty has stated, the Muslims fled. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O servants of Allah! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger (present)." Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O group of Muhajireen! I am the servant of Allah and His Messenger (present)." The narrator says: Then Allah Almighty defeated the polytheists. No sword was struck, nor was any spear thrown. The narrator says: And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said that day: "Whoever kills a disbeliever, he will have his belongings." Hazrat Anas says, so on that day Hazrat Abu Talha killed twenty (20) men and took their belongings. Hazrat Abu Qatadah says: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! I struck a man on the neck with a sword and killed him; he had armor on his body, but someone else took the armor before me. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: See who has taken the armor. The narrator says: A man stood up and said: I have taken the armor. Please make him content with something else (for leaving it) and give me the armor. Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked for something, he would give it or remain silent (i.e., not refuse). So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. The narrator says: Hazrat Umar said: No, by Allah! Allah will not take this booty away from one of His lions, nor will He give it to you. The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) laughed and said: "Umar has spoken the truth." Hazrat Abu Talha met Umm Sulaim. Umm Sulaim had a dagger with her. Hazrat Abu Talha asked: O Umm Sulaim! What is this with you? She replied: My intention is that if any of the polytheists comes near me, I will rip open his belly with this dagger and pull out his intestines. Hazrat Abu Talha said (to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Did you not hear what Umm Sulaim is saying? Umm Sulaim said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! After us, kill well those people who are from among the Tulaqa. O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! These people have already been defeated by you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied: "Surely Allah is sufficient and excellent."

Hazrat Iyas bin Salamah narrates from his father that I participated in the battle against Hawazin with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. We were eating breakfast, and most of our people were on foot, and among us were weak people as well, when a man riding a red camel came. He threw a leather rope from the saddle of his (camel), and a young man tied his camel with it. Then he came and ate food with the people. When he saw the weakness and small number of the people, he ran towards his camel, untied it, made it sit down, mounted it, and began to spur the camel on. One of the companions of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, who belonged to Banu Aslam, followed him on a she-camel. I chased after the fleeing man. When the Banu Aslam man's she-camel came close to the man's camel, I went ahead and grabbed the camel's bridle. As soon as he dismounted, I killed the man. Then I brought the mount and its equipment to the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet asked, "Who killed this man?" The people replied, "Ibn Akwa' did." So he gave me his equipment and belongings.
Hadith 39776
It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Zaid that when Allah Almighty granted His Messenger the spoils of war in the Battle of Hunain, which He intended to give, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed that wealth among the people and among those whose hearts were to be reconciled, but he did not distribute any wealth among the Ansar nor did he give them anything. When they did not receive a share, it was as if they felt it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) addressed them and said: "O group of Ansar! Did I not find you astray, then Allah guided you through me? And you were scattered and divided, then Allah united you through me. And did I not find you poor, then Allah enriched you through me?" The narrator says: Whenever the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked anything, the Companions would reply: Allah and His Messenger are the greatest benefactors. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What prevents you from replying?" The Companions said: Allah and His Messenger are the greatest benefactors. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "If you wish, you may say: You came to us in such and such a state." Are you not pleased that people take away sheep and camels, and you take the Messenger of Allah back to your homes? If there had been no migration, I would have been one of the Ansar. If all people were to walk in a valley or a mountain pass, I would walk in the valley or mountain pass of the Ansar. The Ansar are like the inner garment (close to the body), and the rest of the people are like the outer garment (over the body). After me, you will see others being preferred over you, but be patient until you meet me at the Hawd (the Pond)."
