The Conversion of Adi ibn Hatim (رضی اللہ عنہ) to Islam
Hadith 39366
٣٩٣٦٦ - (حدثنا أبو بكر قال) (١): حدثنا (حسين) (٢) بن محمد قال: (أخبرنا) (٣) جرير بن حازم عن محمد بن سيرين عن أبي عبيدة بن حذيفة أن رجلا قال: قلت أسأل عن حديث (٤) عدي بن حاتم وأنا في ناحية الكوفة، فأكون أنا الذي أسمعه منه، فأتيته فقلت: أتعرفني؟ قال: نعم، أنت فلان بن فلان وسماه باسمه، (قلت) (٥): حدثني قال: بُعث النبي ﵊ (٦) فكرهتُه أشد ما كرهت شيئا قط فانطلقت حتى أنزل أقصى (أهل) (٧) العرب مما (يلي) (٨) الروم، ⦗٣٩٧⦘ فكرهت مكاني أشد مما كرهت (مكاني) (٩) الأول، فقلت: لآتين هذا الرجل فإن كان كاذبا لا يضرني، وإن كان صادقا لا يخفى عليَّ، فقدمت المدينة فاستشرفني الناس وقالوا: جاء عدي بن حاتم فقال: النبي ﷺ: "يا عدي بن حاتم أسلم تسلم"، قلت: إني من أهل دين، قال: "أنا أعلم بدينك منك"، قال: قلت: أنت أعلم بديني مني؟ قال: "نعم، أنا أعلم بدينك منك"، قلت: أنت أعلم بديني مني؟ قال: "نعم"، (قال) (١٠): "ألست ركوسيا؟ " قلت: بلى، قال: "أولست (ترأس) (١١) قومك؟ " قلت: بلى، قال: "أو لست تأخذ المرباع"، قلت: بلى، قال: "ذلك لا يحل (لك) (١٢) في دينك"، قال: فتواضعت من نفسي، قال: "يا عدي بن حاتم أسلم تسلم، فإني ما أظن أو أحسب أنه يمنعك من أن تسلم إلا خَصَاصةُ من ترى حولي، وإنك ترى الناس علينا إلبا واحدا ويدا واحدة، فهل أتيت الحيرة"، قلت: لا، وقد علمتُ مكانَها، قال: "يوشك الظعينة أن (ترحل) (١٣) من الحيرة حتى تطوف بالبيت بغير جوار، (ولتفتحن) (١٤) عليكم كنوز كسرى بن هرمز (١٥) "، قالها ثلاثًا، يوشك أن يُهِمّ الرجل من يقبل صدقته، (فلقد) (١٦). رأيت الظعينة تخرج من الحيرة تطوف بالبيت بغير جوار، ولقد كنت في أول خيل أغارت على المدائن، (ولتجيء) (١٧) الثالثة إنه ⦗٣٩٨⦘ لقول رسول اللَّه ﷺ (قاله لي) (١٨) (١٩).
Hazrat Abu Ubaidah bin Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that a man says: I said, I will ask about the news of ‘Adi bin Hatim, and I was in a village of Kufa so that I could hear this matter directly from him. So I presented myself before him and said: Do you recognize me? He replied: Yes! You are so-and-so, son of so-and-so, and he mentioned my name. I said: Please narrate the matter to me. He said: When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was sent, I disliked this matter as much as I had ever disliked anything. So I left, until I reached the farthest part of the Arabs, which borders Rome, and settled there. Then I disliked that place even more than the first. So I said: I will certainly go to this man. If he is a liar, he will not harm me. And if he is truthful, then it will become clear to me.
2. So I arrived in Madinah. People looked at me with attention and began to say: ‘Adi bin Hatim has come. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O ‘Adi! Accept Islam, you will find safety. I said: I also follow a religion. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I know your religion better than you. He says: I said: Do you know my religion better than I do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! I know your religion better than you. I (again) said: Do you know my religion better than I do? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! (Then) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not a Rakusi (a religion between Christianity and Sabeanism)? I said: Why not. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Are you not the chief of your people? I said: Why not. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you not take a quarter (of the people's wealth)? I said: Why not! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: This is not lawful for you in your religion. ‘Adi says: I felt inferior within myself.
3. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O ‘Adi bin Hatim! Accept Islam, you will find safety. I think, or I suppose, that what is preventing you from accepting Islam is that you see the poor around me, and you find people united against us. Have you been to Hira? I said: No! But I know its location. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The time is near when a woman traveler will depart from Hira without any companion and will perform Tawaf of the House of Allah. And surely, the treasures of Kisra bin Hurmuz will be opened for you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times. The time is near when a man will look for someone to accept his zakat.
4. So indeed, I (‘Adi) saw the woman traveler who departed from Hira without a companion and came to perform Tawaf of the House of Allah. And indeed, I was among the horsemen who attacked Mada’in. And surely, the time of your statement will also come, because this is the statement of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) which he said to me.
