Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Buraq was brought to me. It was a white animal, taller than a donkey and smaller than a mule. It would place its hoof where its gaze ended. So I mounted it, and it carried me until I reached Bayt al-Maqdis. I tied the animal to the ring to which the Prophets used to tie their animals. Then I entered Bayt al-Maqdis and prayed two rak‘ahs there. When I came out, Jibril brought me a vessel of wine and a vessel of milk. I chose the milk. Jibril said, 'You have chosen the natural disposition and have done the right thing.'

2. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Then we were taken up to the lowest heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' Jibril said, 'I am Jibril.' It was asked, 'And who is with you?' Jibril said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'Indeed, he has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met Adam. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being. Then we were taken up to the second heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' Jibril said, 'Jibril.' It was asked, 'And who is with you?' Jibril said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'He has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met my two maternal cousins, Yahya and ‘Isa. Both welcomed me and prayed for my well-being.

3. Then we were taken up to the third heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'Jibril!' Then it was asked, 'And who is with you?' Jibril said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' The angels asked, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'Indeed, he has been sent for.' So the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met Yusuf, and he had been given a great portion of beauty. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being. Then we were taken up to the fourth heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am Jibril.' It was asked, 'Who is with you?' Jibril said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' The angels said, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'Indeed, he has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us, and suddenly I met Hazrat Idris. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being. Then the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Allah Almighty says: "And We raised him to a high station."

4. Then we were taken up to the fifth heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' He said, 'I am Jibril.' It was asked, 'And who is with you?' He said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' It was asked, 'Has he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'He has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met Hazrat Harun. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being. Then we were taken up to the sixth heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am Jibril.' It was asked, 'And who is with you?' He said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' It was asked, '(Has) he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'Indeed, he has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met Hazrat Musa. He welcomed me and prayed for my well-being.

5. Then we were taken up to the seventh heaven. Jibril asked for the door to be opened. It was asked, 'Who are you?' He replied, 'I am Jibril.' Then it was asked, 'And who is with you?' He said, 'Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)!' Then it was asked, '(Has) he been sent for?' Jibril said, 'Indeed, he has been sent for.' Then the door was opened for us. Suddenly, I met Ibrahim, and he was reclining against the Bayt al-Ma‘mur. (This is the place where) every day seventy thousand angels enter, who will never return again.

6. Then I was taken to Sidrat al-Muntaha. Its leaves were like the ears of elephants and...

Hazrat Malik bin Sa’sa’ah narrates from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) something similar to this or resembling it.

Hazrat Zararah bin Aufi narrates that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night I was taken on the Isra, I spent the morning in Mecca. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was anxious because of my affair (the Mi’raj), and I knew that people would belie me. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat apart and saddened, when Abu Jahl passed by him and came to him until he sat down beside him and, mocking, asked: Is there any (new) news? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. Abu Jahl asked: What is it? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was taken on a journey last night. Abu Jahl asked: To where? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: To Bayt al-Maqdis. Abu Jahl said: Then (after the journey) you spent the morning among us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Abu Jahl did not consider it a lie. Fearing that if he called your people, you (the Prophet) might deny it, Abu Jahl said: If I call your people to you, will you tell them what you have told me? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! Abu Jahl said: O assembly of Banu Ka’b bin Lu’ayy! Come here. The narrator says: So all the people gathered until they sat with the two of them. Then Abu Jahl said: Relate to your people what you have related to me. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was taken on a journey last night. The people asked: To where? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: To Bayt al-Maqdis. The people said: Then you spent the morning among us? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes! The narrator says: Some people started clapping, and some, considering it a lie, in astonishment placed their hands on their heads and said: Can you describe the mosque (al-Aqsa) for us? The narrator says that among the people were those who had traveled to that city and had seen Masjid al-Aqsa. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: So I began to describe (the mosque) for them, and I continued describing it until some of the features of the mosque became confused for me, so the mosque was brought (before me) and I began to look at it, until the mosque was placed beyond Dar Aqil or Dar Aqaal. So I described the mosque while I was looking at it. The people said: By Allah, the description (of the mosque) is absolutely correct.

Hazrat Zir narrates from Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Yaman that Buraq was brought to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It was a long, white animal that would place its hoof at the farthest point seen. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Jibreel rode on its back until both reached Bayt al-Maqdis, and the gates of the heavens were opened for them. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Paradise and Hell. The narrator says: Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not pray in Bayt al-Maqdis. Hazrat Zir says that I asked: Why not? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did pray. Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O bald one! What is your name? I recognize your face but do not know your name. Hazrat Zir says: I replied: Zir bin Hubaysh. The narrator says: He said: The command of Allah is: { سُبْحَانَ الَّذِی أَسْرَی بِعَبْدِہِ لَیْلاً مِنَ الْمَسْجِدِ الْحَرَامِ إلَی الْمَسْجِدِ الأَقْصَی الَّذِی بَارَکْنَا حَوْلَہُ لِنُرِیَہُ مِنْ آیَاتِنَا ، إِنَّہُ ہُوَ السَّمِیعُ الْبَصِیرُ } Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did you find the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) praying there? If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had prayed in Bayt al-Maqdis, we would have prayed with him just as we prayed with him in Masjid al-Haram. Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tie the animal to the ring with which the Prophets used to tie (their animals)? Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fear that it would run away, even though Allah Almighty had brought it?

Narrated from Hazrat Abu Huraira that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "On the night I was taken on the Night Journey, I saw that when we reached the seventh heaven, I looked upwards and saw thunder, lightning, and claps of thunder. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I came upon a group whose bellies were like houses, and inside them were snakes that could be seen from the outside. I asked: O Jibreel! Who are these people? Jibreel said: These are the people who consumed usury. Then when I descended towards the lowest heaven, I looked down. I saw dust, smoke, and heard voices. I asked: O Jibreel! What is this? Jibreel said: These are the devils who deceive the eyes of the children of Adam. They do not reflect on the signs of the heavens and the earth. If these things were not present, the children of Adam would see wonders."

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The night I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by Prophet Musa near the red mound, and he was standing in his blessed grave performing prayer.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The night I was taken on the Night Journey, I passed by a group of people whose lips were being cut with scissors of Hell. I asked: Who are these people? It was said: These are the preachers of the world who used to enjoin good upon others but forgot themselves, and they used to recite the Book. Do they not have sense?

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Shaddad that when the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was taken on the Night Journey, an animal was brought to him that was bigger than a donkey and smaller than a mule. It would place its hoof at the farthest point of its sight. It was called Buraq. So, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by a caravan of the polytheists’ camels, and they became startled. The polytheists said, “O people! What is this?” They replied, “We do not see anything. It is just the wind.” Until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) reached Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). Two vessels were brought to him, one containing wine and the other containing milk. The Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the vessel of milk, so Jibreel said to him, “You have been guided to the right path, and your Ummah has been rightly guided.” Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) proceeded towards the city.

It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When I reached the Sidrah (Lote Tree), (I saw that) its leaves were like the ears of elephants and its berries were like large jars. Then, when Allah the Exalted covered it as He willed, it changed, and then ruby came to my mind.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ghazwan that Sidrat al-Muntaha is the center of Paradise.

Hazrat Abdullah narrates the Divine Command regarding Sidrat al-Muntaha: He says, "It is the center of Paradise, and upon it are curtains of silk and exquisite kinds."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ka'b that Sidrat al-Muntaha is the place where the matter of every prophet and angel reaches its end.
