Hadith 39319
It is narrated from Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that one day the Quraysh gathered together and said: Look for the one among you who is the greatest magician, soothsayer, and poet, and then let that person go to the man who has caused division in our group, has shattered our affairs, and has found fault in our religion. Then let that person speak with him and see what answer he gives. The people said: I do not know of anyone except Utbah bin Rabi’ah. The people said: O Abu al-Walid, it is you. So Utbah came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Are you better or Abdullah? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) remained silent. Then he said: Are you better or Abdul Muttalib? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) again remained silent. Then Utbah said: If you think that these people are better than you, then indeed they worshipped those deities whom you call defective. And if you think that you are better than them, then speak so that we may listen to you. By God, we have not seen in our people a more ill-omened kid (even) than you. You have caused division in our unity, shattered our affairs, found fault in our religion, and disgraced us among the Arabs, so much so that this matter is circulating among the Arabs that there is a magician among the Quraysh and a soothsayer among the Quraysh. By God! We are waiting for nothing but something like the cry of a pregnant woman, so that some of us may stand against others with swords until we are all destroyed. O man! If you desire manliness, then choose whichever woman you wish from among the women of Quraysh. We will marry you to ten women. And if you have any (financial) need, we will gather (so much) for you that you alone will be the richest among all the Quraysh. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you finished speaking? Utbah said: Yes! Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) recited: Bismillah ar-Rahman ar-Raheem { حم تَنْزِیلٌ مِنَ الرَّحْمَن الرَّحِیمِ } until he (peace and blessings be upon him) reached this verse: { فَإِنْ أَعْرَضُوا فَقُلْ أَنْذَرْتُکُمْ صَاعِقَۃً مِثْلَ صَاعِقَۃِ عَادٍ وَثَمُودَ } Then Utbah said to him (peace and blessings be upon him): Enough, enough. Do you have anything besides this? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: No! Utbah returned to the Quraysh. The Quraysh asked: What news do you bring? Utbah said: I have not left out anything that I thought you would want me to discuss with him, except that I have discussed it with him. The Quraysh said: Then did he answer you? Utbah said: Yes! (Then) Utbah said: By the One who established the Ka’bah, I did not understand anything from what he said except that he warns you of the thunderbolt of ‘Ad and Thamud. The Quraysh said: May you perish! A man speaks to you in Arabic and you do not know what he said? Utbah said: By God! I understood nothing from his speech except the thunderbolt.
Hadith 39320
It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Al-Aas that I never saw the Quraysh intending anything against the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) except one day when they were plotting against him and were sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was performing prayer at the Maqam Ibrahim. Then Uqbah bin Abi Mu'it stood up and put his sheet around the neck of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and pulled him until the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was about to fall on his knees. The people raised a commotion, and people thought that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had been killed. Hazrat Abu Bakr advanced forcefully until he grabbed the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from behind his armpits and began to say: { أَتَقْتُلُونَ رَجُلاً أَنْ یَقُولَ رَبِّی اللَّہُ } Then the people moved away from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and performed the prayer. When he had finished the prayer, he passed by the Quraysh while they were sitting in the shade of the Ka'bah. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O group of Quraysh! Beware! By the One in whose hand is the soul of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), I have not been sent to you except with slaughter. And he pointed to his throat with his hand. The narrator says: Abu Jahl said to him: O Muhammad! You were not ignorant. The narrator says: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You are also among them.
Hadith 39321
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Abu Jahl passed by and said, "Did I not forbid you?" So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked him. Abu Jahl said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "O Muhammad! Why do you rebuke me? By God, you know that among the Quraysh there is no one with a greater assembly than mine." The narrator says: Hazrat Jibreel said: { فَلْیَدْعُ نَادِیَہُ } The narrator says that Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: "By God, if Abu Jahl had called his assembly (companions), the angels of punishment, Zabaniyah, would have seized him."
Hadith 39322
Narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was praying in the shade of the Kaaba. The narrator says: Abu Jahl and the people of Quraysh said: At that time, a camel had been slaughtered in some neighborhood of Mecca. The narrator says: They sent someone, so he brought the camel's entrails and they threw it upon the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: Hazrat Fatimah came and removed it from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) repeated this three times: O Allah! Seize the Quraysh, O Allah! Seize the Quraysh, O Allah! Seize the Quraysh. Abu Jahl bin Hisham, Utbah bin Rabi'ah, Shaybah bin Rabi'ah, Walid bin Utbah, Umayyah bin Khalaf, and Uqbah bin Abi Mu'it. The narrator says: Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) says that I saw all of them killed in the well of Badr. Abu Ishaq says that I have forgotten the name of the seventh man.
Hadith 39323
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when Abu Talib’s illness (of death) began, a group of the Quraysh came to him, among whom was Abu Jahl. The narrator says: They said (to Abu Talib), “Your nephew insults our gods, and he does this and says this. If you would send for him and forbid him (it would be good).” Abu Talib sent (someone) to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), or the narrator says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) himself came and entered the house. There was the space of one man’s sitting between Abu Talib and him. The narrator says: Abu Jahl feared that if the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sat beside Abu Talib, this would soften Abu Talib’s heart towards him. So Abu Jahl jumped up and sat in that place, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not find any seat near his uncle, so he sat by the door. Abu Talib said, “O nephew! What is the reason that your people are complaining about you? They think that you speak ill of their gods and say this and do this.” The narrator says: The Quraysh reproached the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) greatly. The narrator says: Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) spoke and said, “O uncle! I want to call them to a word, if they say it, the Arabs will become subservient to them and the non-Arabs will send them their tribute.” The narrator says: The Quraysh were astonished at the words of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The narrator says: The people said, “One word! Yes! By your father, even ten (words like that), what is that word?” Abu Talib asked, “O nephew! What is that word?” The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, “La ilaha illallah (There is no god but Allah).” The narrator states: All the Quraysh stood up in alarm, dusting off their clothes, and they were saying, { أَجَعَلَ الآلِہَۃَ إِلَہًا وَاحِدًا ، إِنَّ ہَذَا لَشَیْئٌ عُجَابٌ} The narrator says that they recited up to { لَمَّا یَذُوقُوا عَذَابِ }.
Hadith 39324
Hazrat Tariq Muharibi narrates that I saw the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the market of Dhu’l-Majaz. And I had gone there to sell something. He says that the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, passed by wearing a red cloak. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, was loudly proclaiming: “O people! Say La ilaha illallah, you will be successful.” And a man was coming behind the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, carrying stones, and he had made the Prophet’s ankles and heels bleed, and that person was saying: O people! Do not follow him! Because he is a liar. The narrator says: I asked, who is this young man? The people said: This is a boy from Banu Abd al-Muttalib. I asked: Who is this man who is throwing stones at him? The people said: This is his uncle, Abd al-Uzza, and he is Abu Lahab.
Hadith 39325
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have been harmed in the way of Allah as no one else has been harmed, and I have been frightened in the way of Allah as no one else has been frightened. And indeed, there have come upon me three days and nights in which there was not even such food for me and Bilal that any living being could eat, except for that amount which Bilal could conceal under his armpit.
Hadith 39326
It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn al-Hanafiyyah regarding the interpretation of the Divine saying { وَلَیَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَہُمْ وَأَثْقَالًا مَعَ أَثْقَالِہِمْ }. He said: Abu Jahl and the chiefs of Quraysh would meet people on the way when they were coming to the Prophet (peace be upon him and his family) to accept Islam, and they would say to the people: He declares wine unlawful and declares adultery unlawful. The things that the Arabs used to do, he declares them unlawful. So return, we will bear your burden. Then this verse was revealed: { وَلَیَحْمِلُنَّ أَثْقَالَہُمْ }
Hadith 39327
It is narrated from Hazrat Anas that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sustained a wound on his blessed head, and four of his front teeth were martyred, and an arrow struck his shoulder. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wiping the blood from his face and saying, "How can that nation succeed which has behaved in this manner with its Prophet, while that Prophet is calling them towards Allah?" Then Allah Almighty revealed this verse: { لَیْسَ لَک مِنَ الأَمْرِ شَیْئٌ ، أَوْ یَتُوبَ عَلَیْہِمْ ، أَوْ یُعَذِّبَہُمْ فَإِنَّہُمْ ظَالِمُونَ }.
Hadith 39328
Hazrat Amir narrates that the Quraysh said to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him: "If you are a prophet, as you claim, then move these two mountains of Makkah, upon which water does not remain, to a distance of four or five days' journey, because they are narrow. So that we may cultivate crops in it and make it a pasture for our cattle. And bring back our deceased forefathers so that they may speak to us and tell us that you are a prophet. And take us to Syria, Yemen, and Hira so that we may come and go in a single night, as you claim you have done." Upon this, Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: { وَلَوْ أَنَّ قُرْآنًا سُیِّرَتْ بِہِ الْجِبَالُ ، أَوْ قُطِّعَتْ بِہِ الأَرْضُ ، أَوْ کُلِّمَ بِہِ الْمَوْتَی }.
