Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Kabsha bint Ka'b, who was in the household of someone from the descendants of Abu Qatadah, that she poured water for Hazrat Abu Qatadah to perform ablution. A cat came and began to drink the water, so Abu Qatadah tilted the vessel for the cat. I began to watch, so he said: O niece! Are you surprised? The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The cat is not impure, because it is among those who frequently come and go among you.

Hazrat Ikrimah narrates that Abu Qatadah used to tilt a vessel for a cat, and it would put its mouth into it. Even then, he would perform ablution with that water.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the cat is a household article (belonging).

Hazrat Safiyyah bint Dabb says that I asked Hussain bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) about the cat. He replied: "It is among the household (i.e., there is no harm in it)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Jariri that a cat put its mouth into Abu Al-Ala's pure water, then he performed ablution with the water left by the cat. And (Imam) Abu Hanifa's opinion is mentioned that: he considered the water left by the cat to be disliked (makruh).
