Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Khuzaymah bin Thabit narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said regarding istinja: There should be three stones, and none of them should be dung.

Abdur Rahman bin Yazid narrates about Hazrat Salman that some polytheists mockingly said to him, "Does your companion (the Prophet) even teach you how to cleanse yourselves after relieving yourselves?" Hazrat Salman replied, "Yes! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed us not to face the Qiblah, not to use our right hands for cleansing, not to suffice with less than three stones, and that none of these three should be dung or a bone."

Hazrat Abdullah narrates that the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went out to relieve himself and said: "Find three stones for me." I brought two stones and a piece of dung to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He took the stones and threw away the dung, and said: "This is impure." And (Imam) Abu Hanifa's opinion has been mentioned that: If, after using three stones, impurity equal to the size of a dirham remains, then it will not suffice without using water.
