Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Zaid narrates that he said: I heard Umar bin Abdul Aziz delivering a sermon at the place of Khanasirah. Thus, I heard him say: The best worship is the fulfillment of obligatory duties and the avoidance of forbidden things.

It is narrated from Hazrat Azhar that he said: I saw Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz delivering a sermon to the people at the place of Khunasirah. He was wearing a patched shirt.

Hazrat Umar bin Al-Waleed narrates. He says that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz came out one Friday … his body was very weak … he delivered the sermon as he used to deliver the sermon. Then he said: O people! Whoever among you does a good deed should praise Allah. And whoever among you does a bad deed should seek forgiveness from Allah. Because it is necessary for people that they perform deeds and Allah will place those deeds upon their necks and will record those deeds for them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ma'rif that he says: I saw Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz at the place of Arafah, delivering a sermon to the people, and he was wearing two green garments. May Allah have mercy on him, when he mentioned death, he said: It is a severe pain, but not like ordinary severe pains. It is a severe grief, but not like ordinary severe griefs.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Zar that he says: I have not seen any person more God-fearing than Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Yahya bin Saeed that he said: It has reached me that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz delivered a sermon to the people at the place of Arafah. He said: O people! You have come from far and near, thus you have made your animals weak and your clothes old, but the fortunate one is not he whose mount has gone ahead, rather the fortunate one is he whose (deeds) have been accepted.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, he says: Mentioning blessings is also gratitude for them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Amr bin Muhajir that he says: The shirt and clothes of Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz were between the ankles and the place where the strap is tied.

It is narrated from Hazrat Muhallab bin Uqbah that he said: When Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz delivered a sermon, he would say: Among the deeds most beloved to Allah Almighty are moderation in wealth, forgiveness when able, and gentleness when in authority. Whoever shows gentleness to a servant (of Allah) in this world, Allah Almighty will show gentleness to him on the Day of Resurrection.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubaid bin Abdul Malik that he said Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz used to say: O Allah! Reform that person in whose reformation lies the reformation of the Ummah of Muhammad. And O Allah! Destroy that person in whose destruction lies the reformation of the Ummah of Muhammad.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ubaid bin Abdul Malik. He says that the person who saw Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz standing at the place of Arafah told me, and he (Umar bin Abdul Aziz), may Allah have mercy on him, was making supplication. And he was gesturing with his finger like this: O Allah! Increase the goodness of the one who does good to the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ), and turn the one who does evil to the Ummah of Muhammad (ﷺ) towards repentance. Then he, may Allah have mercy on him, moved his finger. O Allah! And encompass them from behind with Your mercy.

Hazrat Nafi narrates that Abdul Malik bin Umar said to Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz: O Commander of the Faithful! What is preventing you from fulfilling your intention? By the One in Whose hand is my life! I do not care if pots boil because of you and me. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said: O my son! Is this really from you? Abdul Malik said: Yes, by Allah! He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: All praise is due to Allah Who has created in my progeny such people who assist me in carrying out the command of Allah. O my son! If I were to suddenly bring forth what you have said to the people, I would not be safe from their rejection. Then, when they would reject, I would have no option but the sword. And there is no goodness in any good that comes by the sword. O my son! I am dealing with the people like one who is trying to control a difficult camel. So, if my life is prolonged, I hope that Allah Almighty will enforce something for me, and if death overtakes me, then Allah Almighty knows my intention.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ismail bin Abdul Hakim that he says: One day Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz became angry, and his anger became intense and there was some sharpness in it. His son Abdul Malik was present. So when he saw that your anger had cooled down, he said: O Commander of the Faithful! You should value the blessing of God upon you and remain in the position where Allah Almighty has placed you. The authority of government that Allah has given you, you do not have the right in the matters of the servants for your anger to reach where it did, as I have seen. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz said: How did you say this? So Abdul Malik repeated his words. Hazrat Umar asked: O Abdul Malik! Do you not get angry? He replied: What is the benefit of my broad-mindedness if I do not restrain my anger so that no undesirable thing appears because of it?

It is narrated from Hazrat Ja'far bin Burqan that he says Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, wrote a letter: "Amma ba'd! Indeed, some people seek the world through deeds of the Hereafter, and some storytellers have innovated the practice of sending blessings upon their caliphs and rulers in the manner of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. So when this letter of mine reaches you, command the people that they should send blessings upon the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, and the other prophets. And supplicate for the general Muslim people, and leave out others besides them."

Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz says: When Allah Almighty bestows a blessing upon a servant and then takes it back from him, He grants that person patience. So the patience that Allah Almighty gives to that person is better than the blessing that was taken back.

Hazrat Salih bin Saeed, the muezzin, narrates: He says that I was with Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) at the place of Suwaida. So I gave the call to prayer (adhan) for Isha and he performed the prayer, then went into the palace. After staying there for a short while, he came out again, prayed two rak'ahs like those of Duha, and then sat down with his knees raised (in the position of ihtiba). And he began to recite Surah Anfal. He (may Allah have mercy on him) kept repeating and reciting Surah Anfal continuously. Whenever he passed by a verse of warning, he would show humility, and whenever he passed by a verse of mercy, he would supplicate. This continued until I gave the call to prayer (adhan) for Fajr.

It is narrated from Hazrat Talha bin Yahya that he said: I was sitting with Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz when Hazrat Abdul A'la bin Hilal came to him and said: O Commander of the Faithful! May your remaining life be better for you. May Allah keep you alive. Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz said: O Abu al-Nadr! That supplication has already been completed. But you should make this supplication: May Allah grant you a pure life and cause you to die among the righteous people.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, he says: Indeed, Allah Almighty does not hold the general people accountable because of the actions of specific people. But when sins are committed openly and they are not condemned, then all people become deserving of punishment.

It is narrated from Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz that he said: Whoever does not count his words as part of his actions, his mistakes become many; and whoever acts without knowledge, his bad deeds become more than his good deeds.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) bin Bazimah narrates, he says: I saw Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz in Madinah. He was the best dressed of all, wore the finest fragrance, and was the most graceful in his walk. Then, after that, I saw him walking like monks. So, if anyone tells you that a person's walk is a natural habit, do not believe him after (seeing the example of) Umar bin Abdul Aziz.

It is narrated from Hazrat Ghailan bin Maisarah that a man came to Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz and said: I had cultivated a crop, but an army of the people of Syria passed by it and ruined the crop. The narrator says that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz paid that man ten thousand as compensation.

It is narrated from Hazrat Awza'i that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz, may Allah have mercy on him, advised his governor during a journey for jihad that he should only ride such a mount whose pace could be matched by the weakest mount present in the army.

It is narrated from Hazrat Talha bin Yahya that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz used to send messengers. The narrator says: A freed slave of Hazrat Umar, without his permission, made a man ride on the postal horse. The narrator says: So he (Umar) called him and said: Remain as you are until you assess its value and then deposit it in the Bayt al-Mal (public treasury).

It is narrated from Hazrat Jamee’ bin Abdullah that Hazrat Umar bin Abdul Aziz forbade the messenger from attaching iron to one side of the stick with which animals are struck. The narrator says: He also forbade heavy bridles.
