Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ya’la (may Allah be pleased with him) that he said: When Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym would pass by any gathering, he would say: Speak good words, do good deeds, persist in good actions. Do not let your hearts become hardened, nor let your respite become prolonged, and do not be like those who said, “We have heard,” while in fact they had not heard.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Ya’la (may Allah be pleased with him) that he says: When Hazrat Rabi’ was asked, “How did you begin your morning?” he would reply: “We began our morning in a state of weakness and sinfulness, eating our sustenance and awaiting our deaths.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabee’ that he says: I do not like that a servant should make this supplication to his Lord, saying: O Allah! You have decreed mercy upon Yourself, You have made this decision upon Yourself. (By saying this) the servant shows laziness. I have not seen anyone saying: O my Lord! What was obligatory upon me, I have fulfilled; so now fulfill what is obligatory upon You.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym that he said: There is no absent thing better than death for which a believer waits.

It is narrated about Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym that at the time of his death he made a will. He said: These are the things which Rabi’ bin Khuthaym acknowledges about himself and bears witness to, and Allah alone is sufficient as a witness. And He is sufficient to reward His righteous servants, and sufficient to grant recompense. I am pleased with Allah as my Lord, with Islam as my religion, and with Muhammad (ﷺ) as my Prophet, and I am pleased for myself and for whoever obeys me that I worship Allah among the worshippers and praise Allah among those who praise, and that I show goodwill to the community of Muslims.

Hazrat Abu Hayyan narrates from his father, who says: I never heard Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym mention anything about worldly matters. However, once I heard him say: How many mosques does the orphan have.

It is narrated from Hazrat Bakr bin Ma’az that he says: Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym said to me: O Bakr! Guard your tongue except for that speech which is beneficial to you and not against you. For I have found people to be accused regarding their religion. Obey Allah in what you know, and what you do not know, entrust it to one who knows it. I fear for you more from deliberate actions than from actions done by mistake. Whoever among you is upon goodness today is not better, rather, they are only better than their own final evil. You do not fully follow goodness, nor do you flee from evil as is its due. You have not attained all that Allah Almighty has revealed to Hazrat Muhammad ﷺ, and all that you recite, you do not know what it is. Those hidden matters which are concealed from people are manifest to Allah. Seek a remedy for this. Then he said to himself: What is the remedy for this? It is that you repent and do not return to it again.

It is narrated from the freed slave of Hazrat Rabee’ that Hazrat Rabee’ was praying at night, and when he reached this verse { أَمْ حَسِبَ الَّذِینَ اجْتَرَحُوا السَّیِّئَاتِ }, he kept repeating it until morning.

It is narrated from Ibrahim, he says that Hazrat Rabee’ used to come to Hazrat Alqamah, and there was a path through his mosque, and women would also pass through the mosque with them, but they would not engage in any inappropriate talk.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym regarding { وَإِذًا لاَ تُمَتَّعُونَ إِلاَّ قَلِیلاً }. He said: By "a little," it is meant the respite that is between their death and them.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym regarding { بَلَی مَنْ کَسَبَ سَیِّئَۃً وَأَحَاطَتْ بِہِ خَطِیئَتُہُ }. He says: those who die upon their disbelief, and sometimes he says: those people who die in a state of sin.

It is narrated about Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym that he himself used to clean the toilet. The narrator says that it was said to him: “Is this not sufficient for you?” He replied: “I like that I also take my share from hardship.”

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym that he said: Reduce all speech except for nine things: glorification (tasbih), declaration of the oneness of Allah (tahlil), magnification (takbir), praise (tahmid), your asking for good, your seeking refuge from evil, your enjoining what is right, your forbidding what is wrong, and your recitation of the Qur’an.

It is narrated about Hazrat Rabee’ that he said to his family: Prepare halwa for me. So, halwa was cooked, then he called a madman and Hazrat Rabee’ began to feed him morsels, and his saliva was flowing. When he had eaten and left, the family said to Hazrat Rabee’: We made an effort and prepared it, and then you fed it to such a person who does not even know what he has eaten. Hazrat Rabee’ replied: But Allah knows.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi that he says Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym, since he gained consciousness, has never sat in any gathering. He says, "I fear that someone might be wronged and I may not help him, or someone might falsely accuse another and I may be made responsible to testify about it, and I may not be able to lower my gaze or show the right path."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abu Wa'il that he says: My brother and I went to Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym, and he was sitting in the mosque. He said: What has brought you here? We replied: We have come so that you may remember Allah and we may also remember Allah with you, and you may praise Allah and we may also praise Allah with you. Upon this, he raised both his hands and said: All praise is due to Allah, you were not made to say this. We did not come to you so that you may drink wine and we may drink with you, nor did we come to you so that you may commit adultery and we may commit adultery with you.

Hazrat Rabi’ says that it is astonishing how the Angel of Death comes to three types of people. (First) a king who is locked in his fortresses, yet the angel comes to him, takes out his soul, and leaves his kingdom behind him. And a skilled physician who treats people; the angel comes to him and takes out his soul.

It is narrated about Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym that his horse, worth thirty thousand, was stolen while he was performing the night prayer, but he did not leave his prayer. When morning came, Rabi’ began to ride its foal, and then when morning came, he said: O Allah! He has stolen from me, although I did not steal from him. The narrator says: Hazrat Rabi’ used to recite (Qur’an) in a loud voice. When he heard the sound of footsteps, he recited quietly.

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Umair that he says Hazrat Rabee’ was told, “Shall we not call a physician for you?” He replied, “Give me some respite.” Then he reflected and said: { وَعَادًا وَثُمُودَ وَأَصْحَابَ الرَّسِّ وَقُرُونًا بَیْنَ ذَلِکَ کَثِیرًا وَکُلاًّ ضَرَبْنَا لَہُ الأَمْثَالَ وَکُلاًّ تَبَّرْنَا تَتْبِیرًا } Then he mentioned their greed for worldly life and their desire for this life. He said: These people became ill and some among them were physicians, but neither the one who took the medicine remained nor the one who gave the medicine remained. Both the describer and the described fell prey to destruction. By Allah! Do not call a physician for me.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sha'bi that he says: We went to Hazrat Rabi' bin Khuthaym, and he made this supplication: O Allah! All praise is for You, and all matters return to You, and You alone are worthy of every kind of praise. All goodness is in Your control. We ask You for every good, and we seek refuge in You from every evil.

It is narrated from Hazrat Sariyyah al-Rabi' that she says: When the time of Hazrat Rabi's death approached, his daughter began to weep. He, may Allah have mercy on him, said: O daughter! Why are you weeping? You should say: O glad tidings! My father is meeting with goodness.

It is narrated from Ibrahim that he said: The man who stayed with Rabi' bin Khuthaym for twenty years informed me that he never heard any blameworthy word from him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym that the Divine Command { فَأَمَّا إنْ کَانَ مِنَ الْمُقَرَّبِینَ فَرَوْحٌ وَرَیْحَانٌ وَجَنَّۃُ نَعِیمٍ } stated: These are stored for them. { وَأَمَّا إنْ کَانَ مِنَ الْمُکَذِّبِینَ الضَّالِّینَ فَنُزُلٌ مِنْ حَمِیمٍ } stated: It is with Him. { وَتَصْلِیَۃُ جَحِیمٍ } stated: It is stored for him.

It is narrated from Hazrat Naseer that he says when a beggar would come to Hazrat Rabee', he (may Allah have mercy on him) would say: "Give this beggar some sugar to eat." Because Hazrat Rabee' liked sugar.

It is narrated from Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym regarding the Divine command { یَا أَیُّہَا الإِنْسَاْن مَا غَرَّک بِرَبِّکَ الْکَرِیمِ }, he said: Ignorance did.
