Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Simak narrates regarding Hazrat Nu’man bin Bashir, he says that I heard him say: The example of the son of Adam and death is like a man who has three friends. He says to one of these friends, “What do you have?” That friend says, “I have your wealth. So take from it whatever you wish, and whatever you cannot take, then it is not yours.” Then that man asked the second, “What do you have?” He said, “When you die, I will bury you and leave you alone.” Then that man said to the third, “What do you have?” He said, “Wherever you are, I will remain with you.” Hazrat Nu’man said: So the first friend is his wealth; whatever he has taken is his, and whatever he has not taken is not his. The second is his tribe, his community; when he dies, they will stay with him, then leave him alone. And the third is his deeds, which will be with him wherever he is, and wherever he goes, they will go with him.

Hazrat Nu'man bin Bashir says: Surely, it is utter destruction that you act during the time of trial.

Hazrat Hibban bin Zaid narrates... He was a close friend of Hazrat Nu'man and Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) had appointed him as the governor at the place of Nabk... He says that he heard Hazrat Nu'man saying: Beware! The deeds of Allah's agents are guaranteed by Allah. Beware! The deeds of the children of Adam are not owners of their own guarantee. The narrator says that when Hazrat Nu'man descended from his pulpit, he (Hibban) came to him and wanted to resign. Hazrat Nu'man asked: What has happened to you? He replied: I heard you saying such and such.
