Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I pledge allegiance to you for jihad." The Prophet ﷺ asked him, "Are your parents alive?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet ﷺ said, "Go back and strive in their service, for indeed, serving them is an opportunity for you to earn virtue."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man came to seek permission for jihad from the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Are your parents alive?" He replied: "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Then strive in their service."

It is narrated from Hazrat Kuraib that a woman came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) with her son. Her son wanted to go for jihad, but his mother disliked it. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him: Obey your mother and stay with her.

It is narrated from Hazrat Zarah bin Aufa that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said, "I want to go for jihad while my parents are forbidding me." Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said, "Obey your parents and stay with them. Surely, you will soon find many others besides yourself fighting in Rome."

Hazrat Talha bin Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I presented myself before the Messenger of Allah ﷺ and said, "O Messenger of Allah ﷺ! I wish to go out with you in the path of Allah and seek Allah’s pleasure through it." He ﷺ said, "Is your mother alive?" I replied, "Yes." He ﷺ said, "Then remain in her service." I said, "I do not think, O Prophet of Allah ﷺ, that you have understood what I mean." I repeated my statement several times. The Prophet ﷺ said, "Hold on to your mother’s feet (serve her), for Paradise is there."

It is narrated from Hazrat Urwah (may Allah be pleased with him) that two men left their weak father alone and went out for jihad. When Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came to know of this, he called both of them back and said, "Do not separate from him until his death; (stay with him)."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) that a person asked Hazrat Ubaidullah bin Umair whether a person can go for jihad in a situation where his parents or either one of them dislikes his going. He replied, "No."

It is narrated from Hazrat Abdullah bin Utbah (may Allah be pleased with him) that when Hazrat Muhammad bin Talha intended to go for jihad, his mother went to Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained, so he ordered him to stay. Then when Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) became the caliph, he again intended to go for jihad, so his mother went to Hazrat Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) and complained, so he ordered him to stay and said, "Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not compel me, but I will compel you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Ma'n bin Abdur Rahman that a person named Shaiban went for jihad towards the land of Syria. His father was old, and in his son's memory, he recited verses: "O Shaiban! You do not know how many nights have passed over me after you, in which I remembered you, and your memory is beloved to me. Since you left me, a person standing near me seems like two people. O Shaiban, you are with those armies who spend their nights and days in such a state that they are victims of hardship." When these verses reached Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), he called his son back.

Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When your mother gives you permission to go for jihad, and you know that her desire is that you do not go, then do not go; stay with her.

It is narrated from Hasan (may Allah have mercy on him) that a man came to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to seek permission for jihad. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked him, "Is your mother alive?" He replied, "Yes." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Stay with her and serve her."
