Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Hisham bin Hassan (may Allah have mercy on him) says that when Imam Muhammad (may Allah have mercy on him) was asked about giving ghusl (ritual washing) to a martyr, he (may Allah have mercy on him) would narrate from Hazrat Hujr bin Adi (may Allah have mercy on him) that when Muawiyah killed him, Hazrat Hujr (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Do not remove my armor, and do not wash my blood, and bury me in my clothes and in the state with my blood upon me. For tomorrow I will meet Muawiyah with this very dispute.

Hazrat Qais bin Abi Hazim (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You people should bury me in my clothes, for I am a disputant."

The aforementioned statement of Hazrat Ammar bin Yasir (may Allah be pleased with him) is also narrated from Hazrat Yahya bin Abis (may Allah have mercy on him) through this chain of transmission.

Hazrat Iyzar bin Harith Al-Abdi (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Zaid bin Suhan (may Allah have mercy on him) said on the day of the Battle of Jamal: "When you bury me in the grave, level the grave and do not wash my blood, nor remove my clothes except for my socks. For surely, I will be one who disputes, I will dispute."

Hazrat Mas'ar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Hazrat Zaid bin Suhan said on the day of the Battle of Jamal: Bury us and whoever is stained with our blood.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d bin Ubaid Al-Qari (may Allah have mercy on him) said on the day of the Battle of Qadisiyyah: Surely, tomorrow we will meet the enemy, Insha’Allah. And if we are martyred, do not wash our blood. And do not give us shrouds except in the very clothes that we are wearing.

Hazrat Thabit bin Amarah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Uneim bin Qais (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The martyr will be buried in his clothes and will not be given a bath.

Hazrat Abu Ishaq (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that when one of the companions of Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) was killed by his enemy, we buried him in his clothes.

Hazrat Mughira (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the murdered person is lifted, he should be buried in his clothes, and when he is lifted while he still has breath in him, then he should be treated in the same way as any other deceased person.

Hazrat Isa bin Abi Azza (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Imam Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) gave the ruling regarding the person who was killed by thieves: he should be buried in his clothes and should not be given a bath.

Hazrat Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not perform the funeral prayer over the martyrs of the Battle of Uhud, nor were they given a ritual bath.

Hazrat Abu Ma'shar (may Allah have mercy on him) says that Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) stated: When someone is martyred in a battle, he will be buried in his clothes and will not be given a bath.
