Hadith 33998
Jundub narrates that Hazrat Hudhaifa (may Allah be pleased with him) said that when two angels were sent to destroy the people of Lut (peace be upon him), it was said to them that they should not destroy them until Lut (peace be upon him) testifies against them three times. He says that their path passed by Ibrahim (peace be upon him), so they came to Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and gave him glad tidings. Allah says { فَلَمَّا ذَہَبَ عَنْ إبْرَاہِیمَ الرَّوْعُ وَجَائَتْہُ الْبُشْرَی یُجَادِلُنَا فِی قَوْمِ لُوطٍ } He says that his dispute with them happened in such a way that he said, "If there are fifty Muslims in this town, will you destroy them?" They said, "No." He said, "Then if there are forty Muslims, will you destroy them?" They said, "No," until he reached ten or five; the narrator Humaid is doubtful about this. Then after that, they reached Lut (peace be upon him) while he was working on his land. He thought they were humans, so he secretly took them to his house. (2) After that, they went with him, so he turned to them and said, "Do you know what these people do?" They said, "What do they do?" He said, "There is no one worse among the people than them." So they did not say anything about this and continued walking with him. Then he said the same thing again, and they gave the same answer. He did this three times. After that, he brought them to his house. So his old wife went to his people and said, "Tonight, such men have come as guests to Lut, whom I have never seen more beautiful and fragrant." (3) So they came running to him until they started pushing the door, almost breaking it. Then one of the angels struck them with his wing and pushed them away, and Lut (peace be upon him) climbed up to the door, and they also climbed up, and he addressed them and said, "These are my daughters; they are purer for you. Do not disgrace me regarding my guests. Is there not a sensible man among you?" They said, "You know that we have no right in your daughters, and you also know what we intend." He said, "If only I had some power, or if I could take refuge with a strong supporter." They said, "O Lut! We are messengers from your Lord, and they cannot reach us." At that time, he realized that they were angels sent by Allah. Then he recited up to (a-laysa al-subhu bi-qareeb). (4) He says that one of the angels moved his wing in such a way as to strike, so wherever the wing reached, all the people became blind. So they spent the worst night in a state of blindness and were waiting for the punishment, and Lut (peace be upon him) left with his family, and Jibreel asked for permission to destroy them, and he was granted permission. He lifted the land on which they were and raised it so high that the angels of the lowest heaven heard the barking of their dogs. Then he turned it upside down. His wife, who was with him, heard the sound and looked back, so the punishment overtook her as well, and stones rained down on their messengers.
