Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Nu'man that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) wrote to Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) that remain with the truth; Allah Almighty will be with you.

Abdul Malik bin Ubaid narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "We take help from the strength of a hypocrite, and his sin remains upon him."

Ibn Shubrumah says that I heard Farazdaq say that Ibn Hattan was among the most capable poets.

Zuhri says that whenever I met Ubaidullah bin Abdullah (may Allah have mercy on him), it felt to me as if oceans of knowledge began to flow within me from his words.

Hamzah bin Abi Ammarah narrates that Umar bin Abdul Aziz said to Ubaidullah bin Abdullah, "What connection do you have with poetry?" He replied, "What else can a tuberculosis patient do except to blow (recite poetry)?"

Ibn Awn says that among the people of Basra, Muslim bin Yasar held a higher status than Hasan al-Basri, until his rank diminished due to his association with Ibn al-Ash'ath. Therefore, Abu Sa'id Hasan al-Basri remained of high status, while the other's rank declined.

Umair bin Hani narrates that Hajjaj’s companion Munqidh informed me that when Hajjaj killed Saeed bin Jubair, for three nights he remained awake saying, “How Saeed bin Jubair has become my enemy.”

Abdullah bin Salimah narrates that during the Battle of Siffin, a poet was satirizing Hazrat Muawiyah __REF_N__ and Amr bin Aas __REF_N__, and Ammar __REF_N__ was saying, "Stay close to the two elders." At this, a man said, "You say this even though you are a companion of the Messenger of Allah __QUR_N__?" Hazrat Ammar __REF_N__ replied, "If you wish to sit, then sit, and if you wish to go, then go."

Muhammad bin Sirin narrates that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) used to say: May Allah have mercy on Abdullah bin Zubair, for he desired the dinar of Syria, and may Allah have mercy on Marwan, for he desired the dirham of Iraq.

It is narrated from Hasan that Ziyad sent a message to Hakam bin Amr Ghafari, who was the governor of Khurasan, stating that the Commander of the Faithful says that gold and silver should be set aside for him and not distributed among the people. In reply, he wrote: I have received your letter in which you mentioned that the Commander of the Faithful has sent this message that gold and silver should be set aside for him, and before the letter of the Commander of the Faithful, I have read the Book of Allah. By Allah, if the heavens and the earth were completely closed upon a servant, and then he feared Allah, Allah would make a way out for him. And peace be upon you. Then he said to the people: Bring your wealth to me in the morning. So they brought it, and he distributed all that wealth among them.

It is narrated from Abdullah bin Muhammad bin Umar bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) was always with us as if he were a member of our household, until he reached his son Abdullah, and he diverted his attention from us.

Ubadah bin Nusayy narrates that the companions (may Allah be pleased with them) mentioned poets in the presence of the Prophet ﷺ. When the name of Imru’ al-Qais was mentioned, he said: The mention of this poet will remain on people’s tongues in this world as well as in the Hereafter, and on the Day of Resurrection he will be carrying the banner of poetry in Hell, or he said, carrying the banner of poetry in the Fire.

Hunaidah bin Khalid Khuzai reports that the first head to be sent as a gift in Islam was the head of Ibn al-Hamiq.

Abu Juwayriyah Jarami narrates: I was among those who were heading towards Syria on the day of the Battle of Khazir. When we confronted the opposing side, a strong wind blew in their camp, and they fled. So we killed them all night until morning. Ibrahim bin Ash’ath said: Last night I killed a man from whom a great fragrance was emanating, and I think that man was Ibn Marjanah himself. I killed him in such a way that both his feet fell towards the east and his head towards the west, or his head fell towards the east and his feet towards the west. He says: I went and saw, and by God, that man was indeed Ibn Marjanah.

Abu Juham Qurashi narrates from his father, he said that some bad news about me reached Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), so he had me flogged. Then he received news that Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) had written me a letter, so he sent two men to search my house. They found that letter in my house. So I said to one of those men, who was from my family, "You are from my family, so conceal my matter." That man went to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and told him the matter. Abu Juham says that then my father and Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mounted and set out, and he said to him, "We have investigated about you, and that matter has turned out to be completely false." My father said, "The matter for which you had me flogged is even more baseless than this."

It is narrated from Abu al-Duha, who says that a person related to me, who heard this from Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), that whenever he saw Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him), he would say: "Mughirah! Woe to you, whenever I have seen you, I have been afraid."

Abdullah bin Sinan narrates that we were in the mosque when Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came to us and said, "O people of Kufa! Tonight, one hundred thousand dirhams have disappeared from your treasury, regarding which I have not received any letter from the Commander of the Faithful."

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah that he said: Beware of these tribulations, for whoever turns towards them, they destroy him. Be aware! Indeed, this nation has an appointed time and a fixed term; if all the people of the earth wish to remove their rule within this term, they will not be able to do so until Allah Himself permits it. Can you move these mountains?!

Hazrat Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me to divide a piece of land between Hazrat Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and Hazrat Khabbab (may Allah be pleased with him), so they started throwing pebbles at each other. When I returned and informed Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) about this, he began to laugh so much that he struck his foot on the ground and said that the land would be about the size of this mosque or a little bigger than it. Then he said, “Why didn’t you stop them?”

It is narrated about Hazrat Adi bin Hatim (may Allah be pleased with him) that once pieces of meat were brought to him, and he said to those present, "Tear it and eat."

Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when allegiance was pledged at the hand of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he came to me and said, "The people of Syria love you, and I appoint you as their governor; you should go to them." I mentioned to him our kinship and marital relations and submitted, "By Allah! I will not pledge allegiance to you." He says that Hazrat Ali left me and went away. Later, Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Umm Kulthum, greeted her, and set out towards Makkah. People came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) has gone towards Syria. So he demanded that people go out and said, "Let someone go quickly and put his sheet around the neck of his camel." It is said that someone conveyed this news to Umm Kulthum, so she sent a message to her respected father, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), saying, "What are you doing? He came to me, greeted me, and went towards Makkah." Upon hearing this, the people returned.

Hazrat Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said that we used to take pride among people through four men: through our jurist, our preacher, our muezzin, and our reciter. Our jurist was Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), our muezzin was Abu Mahzoorah, our preacher was Ubaid bin Umair, and our reciter was Abdullah bin Sa’ib.

Mujahid says that when Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) decided to demolish the Kaaba, we went towards Mina and we were waiting for punishment.

Hazrat Safiyyah narrates that Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) entered the Sacred Mosque while Hazrat Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) was hanging on the gallows. People said to him that Hazrat Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) is coming. Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) went to Hazrat Asma and advised and counseled her, saying that the body has no real significance, and souls are with Allah Almighty. Be patient! And hope for reward from Allah Almighty! She replied, "What can prevent me from being patient? When the head of Yahya bin Zakariya (peace be upon him) was given to a wicked woman of the Children of Israel."

Ibn Abi Mulaykah narrates that after the killing of Hazrat Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), I went to Hazrat Asma (may Allah be pleased with her). She said, "I have heard that people have crucified Abdullah upside down, and along with him, they have also hung a cat. By Allah, I wish that before my death, his body is given to me so that I may wash him, apply fragrance, shroud him, and bury him." Shortly after, a letter from Abdul Malik arrived stating that his body should be handed over to his family. Thus, he was brought to Hazrat Asma, and she washed him, applied fragrance, shrouded him, and buried him.

Hazrat Urwah narrates that I and Abdullah bin Zubair went to Hazrat Asma ten nights before the killing of Hazrat Abdullah. Hazrat Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) was unwell. Hazrat Abdullah asked her, "How are you feeling?" She replied, "I am in pain." Hazrat Abdullah said, "There is comfort in death." She said, "Perhaps you are giving me news of my death; is this what you want? Do not do so. By Allah! I do not wish to die until I know of one of your two conditions: either you will be killed, in which case I will hope for reward from Allah and be patient, or you will gain dominance, and my eyes will be cooled. Beware that you are not faced with a situation that is not suitable for you, and you accept it just to escape death." The narrator says that Ibn Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) said this to her because he was certain of his own killing, and he thought that perhaps Hazrat Asma (may Allah be pleased with her) would not be grieved by his death.

The narrator reports from his father that when Hajjaj killed Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him), he took him to Mina and crucified him near a mound in the middle of the valley. Then he said to the people, "Look at this man; he is the worst person of this Ummah." The narrator says, "I saw Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) coming on a mule. He began to bring his mule close to the beam, but the mule started to shy away. He said to his servant, 'Hold its reins and bring it near the beam.' He says, 'I saw that he brought the mule close to the beam.' Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) stopped there and said: 'May Allah have mercy on you. Indeed, you were one who fasted much and stood much in prayer. And surely, that Ummah has succeeded whose worst person is like you.'"

Hilal bin Yasaf narrates that the messenger who brought Mukhtar’s head to Abdullah bin Zubair told me: When I placed Mukhtar’s head before him, he said, “Everything that Ka’b told me, I have seen its confirmation, except for one thing: he told me that a man from the tribe of Banu Thaqif would kill me. I think that I have killed that Thaqafi myself.”

Ya'la bin Harmalah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hajjaj delivered a speech in the plain of Arafat on the day of Arafah and spoke at great length. Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said to him, "Today is a day of remembrance (dhikr)." He says that Hajjaj continued his sermon. Abdullah repeated this statement two or three times, then said, "O Nafi', give the call to prayer (adhan) for the prayer." Hearing this, Hajjaj descended from the pulpit.

Qais narrates that Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You do not inform me about these two stations of yours, but even so, I will ask you and I will discern from your faces which station is better." He says that Jarir submitted to him: "O Commander of the Faithful! I will tell you. One station, in terms of trees, is close to the land of the Arabs, and the other station is in the land of Persia, where there is severe fever, heat, and bedbugs, that is, Mada'in." He says that Hazrat Ammar contradicted him and said: "You have lied." Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "You have lied even more than him." Then Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Tell me about this leader of yours, is he a reasonable and suitable man?" The people said: "By Allah! He is neither one who does good deeds, nor one who is sufficient on his own, nor does he know politics." So he removed him from office and sent Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu'bah (may Allah be pleased with him).

Hazrat Qais narrates that there were good relations between Hazrat Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and Walid bin Uqbah. Hazrat Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) cursed both of them and said, "O Allah! Create arrogance and pride between them." Consequently, later on, one of them used to say to the other that Hazrat Sa'd's curse regarding us has been accepted.

It is narrated from Hazrat Tawus that the mention of the rulers was made in the presence of Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them). Among those people, a man began to speak very harshly against the rulers, to the extent that I did not find anyone in the house who would speak at such length with him. Then I heard Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) say: "O agitator! Do not make yourself a trial for the oppressors!" So he became silent, to the extent that I did not see anyone among the people more reserved in speech than him thereafter.

It is narrated from A'mash that people mentioned the caliphs in the presence of Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said that people like to change them. Upon this, Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said that even if the person by this pillar becomes the ruler of the people, they will not like him either, meaning Abdul Malik bin Marwan.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abzi narrates this allegorical saying of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Many stings are like the sting of a scorpion; when this happens, then join your paternal aunt date, that is, stay with the common people.

Dawood narrates through a man the statement of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that soon there will be severe turmoil.

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed that Mus'ab bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) while he was performing Tawaf between Safa and Marwah. He asked, "Who are you?" He replied, "Your nephew, Mus'ab bin Zubair." He asked, "The governor of Iraq?" He replied, "Yes! I have come to ask you about those people who abandon obedience, shed blood, and seize wealth. Should they be fought against, and if they are overpowered in this, then they fortify themselves and seek amnesty, should they be granted amnesty or should they be killed?" He asked, "How many are they?" He replied, "Five thousand." It is said that upon hearing this, Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) said, "Subhan Allah," and said, "O son of Zubair! May Allah prolong your life. If a man were to come to the goats of Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and at one time slaughter five thousand of them, would you consider that man to have exceeded the limits?" He replied, "Yes!" He said, "You consider this extravagance in the case of animals who do not know Allah, so how have you come to deem it lawful to kill so many people who recite the Kalimah in a single day?!"

Saeed narrates that Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) came to Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "O Ibn Zubair! Refrain from committing irreligion in the sanctuary of Allah, for I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say that soon a man from the Quraysh will commit irreligion in this sanctuary. If his sins are weighed against the sins of all jinn and mankind, his sins will outweigh them. Beware, lest you become that person."

It is narrated from Abu Sufyan who says that Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon to us and said: "You see what calamity we have been afflicted with, so if I command you to do something in which there is obedience to Allah Almighty, then it is obligatory upon you to listen to us and obey. But if there is no obedience to Allah Almighty in a matter, then obedience to it is not necessary, nor will we be pleased with it."

Haritha bin Mudarrib narrates that Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) delivered a sermon and then said: "Your nephew Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) has collected wealth and he wants to distribute it among you." All the people gathered, so Hasan stood up and said: "I have collected this wealth for your poor." Upon hearing this, half of the people stood up and left. Then the first person to take from this wealth was Ash'ath bin Qais.

Hazrat Hani narrates this statement of Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him): Surely, Husain will be killed unjustly, and indeed I know the soil of the land where he will be killed; that place is near two rivers.
