Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Mak'hool narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered Makkah, some jinn met him who threw embers at him. Then Hazrat Jibreel said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Seek refuge. So he (peace and blessings be upon him) sought refuge with these words, and then those jinn were removed from him (peace and blessings be upon him): I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of everything that descends from the sky and that ascends to the sky, from the evil of everything that spreads in the earth and that comes out of the earth, from the evil of the day and the night, and from every night visitor except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful!

Hazrat Muhammad bin Yahya bin Haban narrates that Hazrat Waleed bin Mugheerah complained to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, about thoughts that came to his heart. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said to him: When you come to your bed, recite these words: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from His anger and His punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the whisperings of Satan that they should come near me. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, nothing will harm you until you reach the morning.

Hazrat Yahya bin Jada reports that Hazrat Khalid bin Walid used to fear the night, to the extent that he would go out with a sword. Then he became afraid that he might harm someone, so he complained about this to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Jibreel has told me: A group of jinn are plotting and deceiving you, so recite these words: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of whatever descends from the sky and whatever ascends to it, from the evil of whatever is created in the earth and whatever emerges from it, from the trials of day and night, and from every visitor of the night except one who brings good, O Most Merciful. So Hazrat Khalid recited these words, and his condition was cured.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When any one of you is frightened in his sleep at night, he should recite these words: In the name of Allah: I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, from His wrath and His severe punishment, and from the evil of His servants, and from the evil of the devils, and from their presence.

Hazrat Abu Al-Tiyah narrates that a person asked Hazrat Abdullah bin Khabsh: When the devils tried to deceive the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what would the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do? He replied: Once, some devils came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) from the valleys, and descended from the mountain to him, among them was a devil who had a burning ember with him, intending to burn the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with it. So, their terror overcame the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Hazrat Ja'far says: I think the narrator said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to retreat. The narrator says: Then Hazrat Jibreel (Gabriel) appeared before the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)! Recite! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What should I recite? Hazrat Jibreel said: Recite! I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of everything He has created, brought into existence, and made, and from the evil of everything that rises in the sky, and from the evil of everything that is created in the earth, and from the evil of everything that emerges from the earth, and from the evil of the trials of day and night, and from the evil of everything that appears at night except that which brings good, O Most Merciful! The narrator says: Then the fire of the devils was extinguished. He says: Thus Allah defeated those devils.

Hazrat Ibn Sabit narrates that Hazrat Khalid bin Waleed could not sleep at night, so the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him: "Shall I not teach you some words, when you say them you will fall asleep? Recite these words: O Allah! Lord of the seven heavens and all that they shade, and Lord of the seven earths and all that they carry, and Lord of the devils and all whom they mislead, be my protector from the evil of all Your creation, lest any of them oppress or transgress against me. Your protection is supreme, and there is no deity except You."
