Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out on a journey, he would supplicate as follows: O Allah! You are my companion in travel and my successor in the household. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from falling ill during the journey and from returning in a state of grief. O Allah! Fold the earth for us and make the journey easy for us.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Sarjis narrates that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) set out on a journey, he would seek refuge from the hardship of travel, from returning in a sorrowful state, from constriction after abundance in sustenance, from the supplication of the oppressed, and from witnessing an evil sight in his home and wealth.

Hazrat Abu Hurairah narrates that a man intended to travel, so he came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Advise me. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I advise you to fear Allah, and to say Takbeer (Allahu Akbar) when ascending every elevation.

Hazrat Awn bin Abdullah narrates that a man came to Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: I intend to travel, so please advise me. He replied: When you set out for your journey, say these words: I begin with the name of Allah, Allah is sufficient for me, I have placed my trust in Allah. When you say, "I begin with the name of Allah," an angel will say, "You have been guided." And when you say, "Allah is sufficient for me," the angel will say, "You have been protected." And when you say, "I have placed my trust in Allah," the angel will say, "You have been taken care of."

Ibrahim narrates that the companions used to supplicate during travel as follows: O Allah! Grant us such goodness in which there is forgiveness from You and Your pleasure. Goodness is in Your control alone. Surely, You have power over all things. O Allah! You are our companion in travel and the guardian of our families. O Allah! Make the distance of the earth easy for us and make our journey easy for us. O Allah! We seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from returning in sorrow, and from witnessing any evil in our family and wealth.

Hazrat Mujahid says that I traveled with Hazrat Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both). When morning came, he would call out like this, three times: Whoever hears, let him hear the praise of Allah and His blessing and every good favor upon us from Him. O Allah! Be our companion! So bestow Your grace upon us. Then, three times, he would call out: O Allah! I seek refuge from Hell.
