Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Muhammad bin Ka'b narrates that Hazrat Abdullah bin Yazid Al-Khatmi used to supplicate as follows: O Allah! Grant me Your love, and the love of that person whose love will benefit me in Your presence. O Allah! Grant me that which I desire, and give me strength regarding that which You desire. And for those beloved things of mine which You have taken away from me, attach my heart instead to those things which are beloved to You.

Ibrahim says that there was a man among us whose name was Harith bin Hummam. He would not sleep except after sitting in the mosque for a little while in the state of prayer, and he used to supplicate like this: O Allah! Grant me healing through a little sleep, and grant me wakefulness in Your obedience.

Hazrat Ziyad bin Alaqah narrates that his uncle Hazrat Qutbah bin Malik used to supplicate as follows: O Allah! Protect me from evil deeds, evil morals, evil desires, and diseases.

Hazrat Talha narrates that Hazrat Mujahid used to seek refuge from the lion, from the dangerous snake, and from the torment of the self.

Hazrat Talha al-Yami narrates that Hazrat Abu Idris, who was among the people of Yemen, used to supplicate as follows: O Allah! Make my eyes weeping, make my silence thoughtful, and turn my speech into remembrance (of You).

Ayyub narrates that Abu Qilabah said these words in his supplication: O Allah! I ask You for pure things, and for abandoning evil deeds, and for the love of the poor, and that You accept my repentance, and when You intend to put Your servants to trial, then cause me to die without being subjected to the trial.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Sabit says that some people had become brothers among themselves. The narrator says: Then they found one of their companions missing for a few days, then he returned. They asked: Where were you? He replied: I was in debt. So one person said: Why did you not supplicate with these words? O Allah! Remover of sorrows, and remover of calamities, and remover of every grief, and responder to the call of the distressed, the Most Merciful of this world and the Hereafter, and the Most Compassionate of both, You alone are my Merciful One, so have mercy on me, O Most Merciful! Such a mercy by which I become independent of the mercy of anyone besides You!

Hazrat Sha’bi narrates that we entered upon Hazrat Rabi’ bin Khuthaym, and he supplicated with these words: O Allah! All praise is for You alone, and all goodness is in Your control, and to You all matters return, and You alone are the deity of all creation. We ask You for all kinds of goodness, and we seek Your protection from all evils.

Hazrat Abdullah al-Rumi narrates that we were with Hazrat Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him). Then a man said to him: O Abu Hamzah! Indeed, your brothers wish that you pray for them. So he supplicated as follows: O Allah! Forgive us, have mercy on us, grant us goodness in this world, grant us goodness in the Hereafter, and protect us from the punishment of Hell. The people said: O Abu Hamzah! Pray more for us. So he repeated the same supplication. The people said: O Abu Hamzah! Pray more for us. So he said: O so-and-so, Allah is sufficient for us. If we are granted all this, then we have been given the goodness of this world and the Hereafter.

Hazrat Tabee’ narrates that Hazrat Ka’b said: If it were not for these words which I recite, the Jews would have made me such that I would scream with the screaming donkeys and bark with the barking dogs. These are the words: I seek refuge in Your noble countenance, and in Your great name, and in Your complete words, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, and whose neighbor is not granted protection, from the evil of everything that descends from the sky and everything that ascends to the sky, and from the evil of that which He has created, originated, and brought into existence.

Hazrat Awn narrates that Hazrat Asma bint Abu Bakr said: Whoever recites Surah Al-Fatiha, Surah Al-Ikhlas, Surah Al-Falaq, and Surah An-Naas after the Friday prayer, he will be protected from that Friday until the next Friday.

Hazrat Sha'bi says that Hazrat Abu Muslim used to say at the end of his speech: May Allah unite your brotherhood through faith, and bring your loved ones closer by His mercy. And may He grant your honored ones power by His grace, and illuminate your hearts through the Qur'an.
