Hazrat Jabir narrates that Hazrat Ma'iz bin Malik came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: Indeed, I have committed adultery. The Prophet asked: Is there any witness to this? So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him back. Hazrat Naeem bin Hazzal narrates that Ma'iz bin Malik was brought up by my father. He committed adultery with a slave woman of the tribe, so my father said to him: Go to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and inform him about what you have done, so that he may seek forgiveness for you. And my father intended by this that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would find a way out for him. So he went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Indeed, I have committed adultery, so establish upon me the ruling of the Book of Allah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him, then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again, until the narrator mentioned four times. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the fourth time and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Indeed, I have committed adultery, so establish upon me the ruling of the Book of Allah. Upon this, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Have you not said this four times? With which woman did you do this? He said: With such-and-such woman. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Did you have intercourse with her? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Did you have sexual relations with her? He said: Yes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked again: Did you have intercourse with her? He said: Yes. The narrator says that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order regarding him, so he was stoned, and he was taken towards the land of Harrah. When he felt the severity of the stones, he began to moan and tried to escape due to the pain. Hazrat Abdullah bin Unais met him, and indeed the companions who were killing him had become exhausted, so he took the thin part of his camel's leg and struck him with it, killing him. Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned this matter before him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not leave him? Perhaps he would have repented and Allah would have accepted his repentance?
Hadith 30684

Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gave the order regarding him, so he was stoned. When the pain from the stones reached him, he began to run away from the pain, and in the meantime, he met a man who had a camel's jawbone in his hand, so he struck him with it and brought him down. The matter of his running away was mentioned before the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) when he felt the pain of the stones. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Why did you not leave him?"

Hazrat Abu Bakr says that Ma'iz bin Malik came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and confessed before him three times. So, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he was detained, that is, he was stoned.

So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him back. When the next day came, he again came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Indeed, I have committed adultery." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent him back a second time as well. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to his people and asked: "Do you find any defect in his mind? Do you see anything wrong in him?" They said: "We know nothing about him except that his mind is like that of our righteous people, as it appears to us." The narrator says: Then he came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) a third time, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again sent a messenger to his people and inquired about him. They informed that there is nothing wrong with him or his mind. So when he came the fourth time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had a pit dug for him, and then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he was stoned to death.

Then, by the order of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he was stoned to death. So we pelted him with pieces of pottery, small stones, and bones, and we neither dug a pit for him nor tied him up. Then he ran ahead of us towards the Harrah area, and we chased after him. He turned towards us and stood, and then we pelted him with stones until he became motionless. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) neither sought forgiveness for him nor spoke ill of him.

And this matter was very distressing to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), to the extent that I noticed its effect on his face. When the anger of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) subsided, he said: O Abu Dharr! Your companion has been forgiven. Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that Hazrat Umar said: I fear that a long time will pass over people until someone will say: We do not find the command of stoning in the Book of Allah! Thus, they will go astray by abandoning an obligation which Allah has revealed. Beware! The command of stoning is true when a man is married, or evidence is established, or she is pregnant, or there is a confession, and indeed I have recited it. Translation: When a married man and a married woman both commit adultery, then you must certainly stone them. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stoned, and after him, we also stoned. Hazrat Sufyan was asked: Did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stone? Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib narrates that Hazrat Ma'iz bin Malik came to Hazrat Abu Bakr and informed him that he had committed adultery. Hazrat Abu Bakr said to him: "Have you mentioned this matter to anyone other than me?" He replied: "No." Hazrat Abu Bakr said to him: "Conceal your fault due to Allah's covering and repent to Allah. Surely, people are shamed but do not take heed, and Allah, the Lord of Honor, accepts His servants' repentance." But his soul did not find peace until he mentioned it before Hazrat Umar. Hazrat Umar also gave him the same answer that Hazrat Abu Bakr had given. His soul still did not find peace until he came to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, and informed him: "Indeed, I have committed adultery." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, turned away from him, until he repeated it several times before the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him. When it became too much, the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, sent a messenger to his people and asked them: "Is he ill? Or is he afflicted with madness?" They replied: "No, by Allah, O Messenger of Allah, indeed he is perfectly sound." The Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, asked: "Is he unmarried or married?" They said: "Rather, he is married." So, by the command of the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, he was stoned to death.

Hazrat Abu Usman bin Nasr narrates that my father said: I was among those who stoned Hazrat Ma'iz. When he felt the pain of the stones, he said: "Return me to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him." But I refused this. The narrator says: I went to Hazrat Asim bin Umar and said: Hazrat Hasan bin Muhammad bin Hanafiyyah says: Indeed, news has reached me that—so I denied this. Then I went to Hazrat Jabir and said: Indeed, Hazrat Aslami has mentioned something from the words of Ma'iz bin Malik, that—"Return me," I deny this! So he replied: I was among those who stoned him, and you said: Indeed, he felt the pain of the stones and said: "Return me to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him. Indeed, my people have put me in distress." And the people said: "Go to the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, he will not kill you." But we did not leave him until we killed him. He turned away from him. He said again: Indeed I have committed adultery, so establish upon me the command of Allah's Book. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again turned away from him, until he mentioned it four times. He said: Take him and stone him. When the pain of the stones became very severe for him, he ran. Just then, Hazrat Abdullah bin Unais or Ibn Anas came out from his jungle and struck him with a camel's shinbone, causing him to fall. So the people stoned him until he was killed. Then it was mentioned before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) about his running. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not leave him so that he might repent, and Allah would accept his repentance? O Hazzal, or he said: O Hazzan! If you had covered him with your garment, it would have been better for you than this deed that you have done.
