Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abu Marwan narrates that Najashi the poet was brought to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) during Ramadan while he was intoxicated, so Hazrat Ali let him go until he became sober. Then he had him flogged with eighty lashes. After that, he ordered him to be imprisoned. The next day, he had him brought out and gave him twenty lashes, and said: "Eighty lashes are for drinking alcohol, and twenty lashes are for daring to defy Allah during Ramadan."

Hazrat Abu Majid Hanafi narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood when a man from among the Muslims brought his nephew and said to him: O Abu Abdur Rahman! He is my brother’s son; I found him in a state of intoxication. Upon this, Hazrat Abdullah bin Masood said: Shake him well, push him, and smell his mouth. So he was made to smell, and you found him in a state of intoxication. He was sent to jail. When the next day came, I came and he was also brought.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Ibrahim said: When a person becomes intoxicated, he should be left alone until he regains his senses, then he should be flogged.

Hazrat Mughira narrates that Hazrat Sha'bi said: When the Imam is intoxicated, he should be flogged while he is not conscious, because if he regains consciousness, he will stop it.
