Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Kardam narrates that a man asked Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them), Hazrat Abu Hurairah, and Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) about a person who has killed a believer—will his repentance be accepted? All these respected companions replied: Does he have the power to bring him back to life? Does he have the power to find a tunnel in the earth or a ladder to the sky? Does he have the power that death will not come to him?

Hazrat Salim bin Abu Ja’d narrates that a man came to Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) and said: O Abu Abbas! What is your opinion about a person who has committed murder intentionally? What is his punishment? He recited this verse: Translation: Its recompense is Hell, he will abide therein forever, and upon him is the wrath of Allah. The man asked: What is your opinion if he repents, believes, and does righteous deeds, then receives guidance? He replied: Where can his repentance be accepted? May your mother lose you! Surely, the murdered person will come on the Day of Resurrection holding his head, and blood will be flowing from his veins, until he stands by the Throne and says: O Lord! Ask him why he killed me?

Hazrat Najiyah narrates that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them) said: These are two grave sins: shirk (associating partners with Allah) and murder.

Hasan Basri narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: I have not repeatedly asked my Lord about anything as much as I have asked Him about the one who kills a believer; yet He did not answer me regarding my request.

Hazrat Abu Duhah narrates that I was with Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) in his tent when a man asked him about a person who has intentionally killed a believer. So Hazrat Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) recited this verse: Whoever intentionally kills a believer, his punishment is Hell; he will abide therein forever. So reflect upon what you have killed!

Hazrat Salamah bin Nabi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Dhahhak (may Allah have mercy on him) said: There is no repentance for the one who kills a believer.

Hasan Basri narrates that Hazrat Abu Musa said: In my view, on the Day of Resurrection, the most detested quarrelsome person will be the one whom I have killed, his veins still bleeding, and he will say: O Lord, ask him for what reason he killed me?

Hazrat Salamah bin Nabi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Dahhak bin Muzahim said: In my view, it is more beloved to repent from killing a believer than to repent from shirk (associating partners with Allah).

Hazrat Salamah bin Nabi T says that Hazrat Dahhak bin Muzahim said about this verse: Translation: And whoever intentionally kills a believer, his recompense is Hell, he will abide therein forever. Since this verse was revealed, no part of it has been abrogated.

Hazrat Uqbah bin Amir Juhani narrates that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Whoever meets Allah in such a state that he has not associated anything with Him and has not shed unlawful blood, he will enter Paradise.

Ibrahim reports that Hazrat Abdullah bin Mas'ud said: A person remains in the openness of religion as long as his hand is clean from blood. But when he dips his hand in unlawful blood, his modesty is taken away from him.

Hazrat Shahr bin Hawshab narrates that Hazrat Abu Darda said: The murdered person will come on the Day of Judgment and sit in the middle of the path. When the killer passes by him, he will stand up, grab him by the collar, and say: O Lord! Ask him for what reason he killed me! Then that person will say that so-and-so ordered me. He (Abu Darda) said: Both the killer and the one who gave the order will be seized and thrown into Hell.

Hazrat Abu Al-Ashhab narrates that Hazrat Muzahim Dhabbi related to Hasan Basri that Hazrat Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: A man was waiting for his camels to come to his pond to drink, when a thirsty rider came to him calmly and said: "May I come to the water?" He replied: "No." So the man went away. He tied his mount, and when his mount saw the water, it approached the pond and entered it. Then the owner of the pond got up, took his sword, and killed that man. The narrator says: So that man went out to seek a fatwa, and he asked some of the companions of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)—I will not mention their names—and all of them disappointed him, until he came to one companion. That companion said to the man: "Do you have the ability to give everything on this earth as ransom, or to build a ladder to the sky?" He said: "No." Then the man had gone a little distance when he was called back and asked: "Do you have parents?" He said: "My mother is alive." That companion said to him: "Go, serve her and obey her. If the other person enters Hell, Allah will distance the one who distances him."

Hazrat Sulaiman bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that Hazrat Abu Saeed Khudri was asked about this verse. Translation: Whoever kills a person—unless it be for murder or for spreading corruption in the land—it is as if he has killed all mankind. Is the ruling of this verse for us the same as it was for the Children of Israel? He replied: Yes, by the One besides whom there is no deity!
