Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

Hazrat Abdullah bin Amr narrates that a man was driving a donkey while he was riding on it. He struck it with a stick he had, and a splinter from it flew and hit another man's eye, blinding it. This matter was then presented before Hazrat Umar bin Khattab, who said: This is one of the hands of the Muslims; no injustice has been done to him. And he placed the blood money for the eye upon the family of the one who caused the injury.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj says that I asked Hazrat Ata regarding a person who inflicts a wound upon himself—will martyrdom be obligatory upon him? He replied: His family will pay the blood money.
