Musannaf Ibn Abi Shaybah

It is narrated from Hazrat Saeed bin Musayyib that a man injured another man's eye, causing partial loss of his vision. This case was brought before Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). He ordered that one of the man's eyes be covered and that he walk while holding an egg, and the man kept looking until his vision was completely gone. Then a mark was placed at that spot. Saeed bin Musayyib states that when the man looked with his other eye, they found it to be normal. So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Give him compensation for the loss of vision in proportion to the damage compared to the other eye.

It is narrated from Hasan regarding a person who has blinded another's eye that compensation will be required in proportion to the extent of the loss of vision.

Hazrat Ibn Jurayj narrates that Ata said that there are fifty camels (as blood money) for the eye, and he said that if some of the sight is lost and some remains, then the blood money will be according to the amount lost. Then he said that the healthy eye will be covered and sight will be checked with the other, then the other will be covered and sight will be checked with the healthy one, and the blood money will be according to the amount of sight that has diminished. I asked, "If the eye has become weak due to old age and then it is injured?" He replied, "Its blood money will be complete."

Hazrat Sha’bi narrates that regarding a person whose eye is injured, the saying of Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is mentioned that he showed him an egg. Sha’bi asked: If he uses his seeing eye more, Ali replied: He may see as much as he can with it. I asked: If he uses his injured eye less, he replied: He should not see less than what he can, rather it is better that he sees as much as he can easily, then the loss will be assessed (an estimate will be made).
